Avoid These Cars RUINED By Their Junk Transmissions!

Car transmissions and engines are one of the biggest problems when it comes to your car reliability. Whether you're driving a car from Jaguar, Nissan, VW, or Kia, an SUV from Jeep or Chrysler, a Truck from a number of makers (including Toyota) or a few others, you could run into these transmissions that I think are a ton of trouble.

All of this is coming from my experience and my personal opinion on how these are built, but I've been doing this for a while and I'm doing lots of research to come to these conclusion.

I always said the biggest problem with car manufacturers is that when they finally build something that works great, they find the need to change it🤷🏻‍♂️

It’s always good to service your transmission fluid (drain and fill) to prevent issues. Some transmissions are just junk regardless if you service it or not.

The ZF 9HP is solid now. Honda uses them in the Odyssey, Ridgeline, and Pilot and they’re not known to be particularly troublesome. They may have had issues on release but it seems as though they’ve worked out the problems. Maybe it’s how Honda programs them?

Great information here. I know folks who ended up with CVT issues on the 7th Gen Maxima and also the Murano. They do not seem to be building these cars for the long haul anymore. Maybe they are just targeting the lease crowd who will hopefully not encounter the problem.

Good information here. From my experiences he is exactly correct too. Not saying all of these are going to fail prematurely, but the odds are not in your favor, especially when buying preowned vehicles.

Something, I've never understood manufacturers installing weak transmissions? 🤔Great vid

CVT transmissions, the death knell of the vehicle at 60k to 90k miles. The recommendation on CVT is to change the fluid every 30K, but inherently a bad unit. Jatco was once an independent sewage plant in the gear ration arena. Then Nissan, to increase profit by purchasing the company, made no improvements. Toyota, however does use their own CVT in Corolla with reliability still outstanding.

I (nor did my brother) did enough research when we bought our used Ford Focus cars (2014 for me, 2015 for my brother). We both got rid of them due to the garbage Powershi(f)t transmission. It was impossible to get fixed, months to even have a chance to even try to fix, parts were unobtainium. Finally with 59K on it, tired of its terrible behaviors, I traded it in Sept. 2021 it with huge depreciation and bought a Mazda CX-30 as one of the few 'small' vehicles with a real transmission - not a POSCVT. Sad as the rest of the car was fine.

I’m original owner of 2015 Dodge Dart SXT with 2.4 liters, 6 speed automatic OD very dependable and now over 342700 miles with and finally the transmission went so it replaced from salvage from original mileage

Honestly the problem starts at the top with all manufacturers, you don't see engineers get elevated to the top only accountants and all they know is to cut costs to safe money not striving sufficiency in design 😊

Surprised there he mentioned the Jatco CVT, but didn’t mention that they are unrepairable. You can have them fixed, and when they go bad the whole unit goes to junk, which then causes supply issues which mean high price for new ones. A normal torque converted trans can usually be rebuilt.

I had 2 with the JATCO. 2015 Murano, 2016 Maxima. Both junk. Got rid of them right before they grenaded. 2 new 4Runners now. Couldn’t be happier.

Yup, Excellent Topic. The Early Model BMW I Had Caused Me Major Greif. Never Ever, Ever, Ever Have A Transmission Rebuilt ! Fined A Wrecked Or Sightly Damaged Model, Like Yours, & Have It Installed In Your Car. Reason ? Rebuilt Transmissions bleed And Leak Inside, Then Burn Seals & Bands, When That Happens, You're Done. These Transmission Shops Know Exactly How Long A Rebuilt Transmission Will Last, 90 Days, Tops ! Very Informative Review, Mark 💯

Valuable information presented here. Video is really a great service during these tough times if you are considering investing hard earned money into a vehicle. Of course, it's prudent to do your own research. Seems spot on to many things I have seen, read or experienced.

Speaking of Dodge, I had a 92 Dodge Shadow America, an inexpensive economy car. This car had the best 3 speed automatic transmission I have ever driven. It shifted so smoothly it was hard to tell the shift points. It downshifted at just the right times to gain speed. The car was reliable and good in snow. When I went to buy a new car, I found they no longer made these. Too bad. RIP little Dodge Shadow, you were a great car.

My 1996 Honda Accord has 389, 500 + miles on the original engine and automatic transmission. Hell if I get a new one with one of those rubber band trannies that won't last 60k miles.

Multi-speed transmissions in these new cars used to comply with ever increasingly strict CAFE standards have never been a good idea and almost no modern vehicle has gotten them right. 6pd. autos were likely the limit and those with 7, 8, 9, 10 gears is too much. They have to be programmed well and almost no manufacturer gets it right. When you step on the gas it’s always a battle between probability, programmed fuel economy and what the driver intends to do. Too many moving parts. They’re jerky, only in the right gear maybe 95 percent of the time and gear hunt at low speeds. You’re spot on with Kia Sportage, terrible 6 speed transmission and vehicle. Only the Aisin 6spd. the ZF 8 speed used in the Ram trucks and believe it or not….Ford’s 8 and 10 speed are the best ones I’ve seen.

You're so right about "Crapco" transmissions!

The 9 speed in the Jeep is built by FCA under license from ZF. The Honda/Acura 9 spd transmission was made by ZF. The drivability of the Honda 9 spd improved greatly over the years.
