The major machine work is easier and usually more cost effective to leave for the machine shop. The small details at the end and stuff like break-in oil are often overlooked costs. The major cost is usually "while I'm here" which includes a new clutch, flywheel ring gear, starter, alternator, etc.

I am SO happy that you did this episode! I have been trying to get a handle on what the machine work was going to cost me for my F 134 Willys engine, and nobody I could find would talk price! It was always, "well I really can't tell you because every job is different and every job has its own complexities." All I wanted was a ball park figure on what the different machining procedures would cost. Thanks for answering that question for me!

Always use non synthetic oil as your break in lube. 1st 500 miles then drain and fill with synthetic. The reason is it will help seat your rings which happens in the first 500 miles.

Thanks for making a straightforward and detailed video man. I just got my first Jeep XJ after having nothing but older Fords. I can see why these things are so popular! They're nimble little bastards. Mines a 96 xj 4 door sport, 4.0l with the ax15. Eventually I want to restore it to factory condition, but for now Ill be dropping around 7-8 grand for rust repair and restoring the drivetrain. These xjs are the shit!

I think you did an awesome job Dale ! Engine rebuilding is not a cheep process, and there are always added expenses involved . I am currently shopping around for a machine shop to do the machine work on my 4.0 in my TJ. This and many more things are going to be on my to do list this next spring and summer. Looking forward to your next video . Until next time take care and have a great weekend .

Thanks for all your videos. I’m working on a rebuild for my YJ some time next year. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out. I got a quote for machining the engine and it was 1300. Since you posted this, I’m definitely going to shop around and find a better deal. Thanks again.

On draining the fuel, you could use Sta-Bil fuel stabilizer to keep the fresh during the year of your rebuild. I add it to my seasonal equipment and fires up great when time to use it again.🤠👍

Valve lapping and a valve job are two completely different things. Over time valve seats will wear and widen or be pitted. That can only be fixed with a valve job where all angles have the correct width. Lapping has a different purpose.

1800.00 dollars I can get a straight 6 long block engine from ATK with a 3 year warranty. I think I will go that route. Thanks for the video.

I have a CJ7 and doing the 2.5 to 4.0 conversion was NOT Cheap.... almost 2K for the rebuilt motor, then all the parts and accessories, clutch, transmission rebuild, exhaust, driveshafts, with labor was about have done some of it myself but CA emissions laws are a pain...i'd rather trust a professional when it comes to the CARB laws.

Nice job man. Had a shop out of San Diego do all the work where they pulled, fully rebuilt, and reinstalled the engine for $2100. Not bad but still a way better deal to do the work yourself.
