2020 Hurricane Season

The record-breaking 2020 Atlantic hurricane season officially ends on Nov. 30.

It had a record 30 named storms—from Arthur to Iota—and was the record fifth consecutive above-normal season. Thirteen storms hit the U.S. coastline; five of which came ashore in Louisiana.

This satellite animation is from NOAA's GOES-16 (GOES East) satellite and runs from May 13 through November 18, 2020.

The GOES East satellite recorded this imagery of the entire Atlantic basin from its operational location of 75.2 degrees west longitude. This allows us to show storms as they form off the coast of Africa and then enter the Atlantic.

slow it down like 100x, slap some more VHS artifacts on there, throw some ambient Soundcloud playlist in the background, and you have yourself a chillwave classic right there

Yikes, the pure length of this video compared to the other NOAA satellite hurricane season timelapse videos just shows how active and long this season was. Not to mention this season was not only the 5th consecutive above average season but also the 5th consecutive season to feature a Cat 5. In November, even.

I seriously wonder if this trend of above average activity and Cat 5 storms will continue into 2021 and 2022, and I really hope not because that could mean a troublesome climatological shift in the Atlantic basin.

Thanks for putting these all together! I love watching once powerful storms get hit by the jet stream and stripped apart. It's wild how far the north eastern side can be pushed back out into the Atlantic while still clinging to some circulation.

I'm not sure what I'm seeing: from 9:00, September 23, to 11:20, October 23, I see a reverse sunglint cutting across North America. It isn't being attenuated by land, like the sunglint in the tropics is. It builds to very noticeable and then fades away by 11:20. Can anyone explain?

This year was incredible. 30 named storms, beating 2005 of 27. 13 hurricanes and 6 majors with the possibility of 4-6 retired names. 2020 will definitely be remembered. The question, did play climate change a role? Maybe not the main player but definitely a factor. A warming climate did help some of these monsters form.
