Hurricanes are the most powerful and destructive storms on the planet. And 2020 surpassed all expectations, becoming the most active hurricane season on record. Have you ever wondered how they form? Or how climate change is affecting them? And, what can we learn from a lab that creates hurricane-force wind and rain to test the strength of houses?

Weathered is a show hosted by meteorologist Maiya May and produced by Balance Media that helps explain the most common natural disasters, what causes them, how they’re changing, and how we can prepare.

I live in Florida, the idea of storms slowing down and being stuck in the eye for hours sounds terrifying! Loved how easy this was to follow and how Maiya breaks it all down!

"put as many layers as you can between you and mother nature"
And here I was considering those winds as opportunities to learn how to fly...

The 2020 hurricane season was a strange one. I can't remember one so backloaded. There were a lot of named storms, but up until early September, those storms really struggled to intensify, it took until the 8th storm to get the first hurricane, and the Accumulated Cyclone Energy index was only a little above average despite the number of storms. A La Nina developed in September and the second half of the season went crazy, especially in the west Caribbean sea where warm sea temperatures combined with near ideal atmospheric conditions to give one of the most active Octobers and Novembers combined on record. Insane that Central America got hit with two cat 4s within a couple of weeks and in virtually the same stretch of coast.

Great episode, can't wait for more! I became decent micro-meteorologist during the decade I flew paragliders, and I enjoy how Maiya described the complexity of hurricane genesis in the clearest and simplest terms without watering things down (pun intended).

I actually moved out of Houston about a week before Hurricane Harvey hit. I was very lucky that I did.

The hurricane in pensacola 2 months ago took its time. Like more than the usual duration for a downfall and hence the broken bridges, floods, destroyed houses and boats. We are really feeling the climate change.

I'd love to see you talk about monolithic domes. They are extremely durable and cheap. If you're building a new home in a hurricane prone area, that's what I'd build.

Wow! Learned a lot of new stuff about hurricanes and why they are getting more destructive. Great show, and scary about how things will get worse. At least there are some things we can do ourselves. Looking forward to more of Weathered.

My family owns property down in Port Aransas, Texas. Harvey made a direct hit on the town as a cat. 4. The town was absolutely devastated, and you can find videos online of what it looked like. Every single building was destroyed, not one was saved from the winds and flooding. The damage can still be seen there, as some houses haven't been fully repaired and some of them were just straight up abandoned. It's extremely sad what happened to these people - and I hope nothing like that happens again - however it is likely that it could happen a second time in the near future due to climate change.

"Port A strong" posters are hung up in pretty much every store in the city, these people are never going to forget what happened.
