"There's no cheating.... except for a tiny computer that's 4000x more powerful than the original hardware of the NES....

"Grandpa, what was gaming like back then?"

"Right around when 4k gaming started to pop up, we'd put 90's PC games onto 80's gaming consoles, and those ran better than the brand new games that were coming out at the time."

It's not cheating if an unaltered NES can still run the game. It just wouldn't have been feasible back then because expansion chips in NES cartridges that gave just a few extra sound channels were expensive to produce.

I need a better hobby than just watching other people do awesome shit

Is it cheating? Yeah, I think so. Is it amazing? Oh most definitely.

"I didn't cheat"
Literally 15 seconds later...
"Here's how I cheated"

When you said you used a Pi and it wasn't cheating I was confused for a second. Then I realized the Pi was in the cartridge, not the console lol. That's freakin' cool!

Reverse emulation is easily one of the coolest things I've seen. I wonder how long before we get a proper reverse emulator? Maybe someone could finally build a Nintendo Playstation? A CD drive that plugs into your SNES allowing you to play PS1 games.

People may say this is cheating, but I think this is really neat. Using modern technology to push old hardware past its limits is a really interesting idea.

0:33 Or the SuperFX chip inside the SNES' DOOM port!

I am in that camp that thinks this is its still cool all the same ^^

All the people who thought he could ever possibly do this without assistance from modern tech, or consider this ‘cheating’ are ridiculous. He is still playing Doom through NES hardware which is an amazing feat! Of course he will need tools to make it happen! This is an amazing thing he has done and I personally ‘get it’!

It's cheating, but hey, take any measure to get Doom on everything

I guess you could say that cartridge is *Knee-Deep in the NES.*

Well done! Gotta love that reverse-emulation! Love to see some updates!

The FX chip was a co-processor. The raspberry pi is a fucking computer

Nah, sorry. It's Doom on Raspberry Pi with a NES acting only as a DAC. Definitely cheating.

Edit: I'll admit it's a cool proof-of-concept though.

You should do Minecraft Pi on the NES. That would be completely awesome.

Not cheating. You could totally travel back in time advertise and sell this cartridge as an NES game and people would be none the wiser.

Kinda cheating? a little... But you have a point about the SuperFX doing more or less the same thing... so.. yeah...
Pretty clever.
