ADF | Exercise Hardcorps 2024

On 24 April, the latest cohort to pass through Long Tan Platoon at the School of Infantry underwent Exercise Hardcorps, the culminating activity marking the end of their training at the School.

After three and a half months of training, the exercise is designed to test soldiers mental and physical readiness with skills that they developed from their course before to become a qualified infantry soldier.

In sections the members set off from midnight undertaking a variety of stands where they were assessed and observed before finally being presented their Skippy badge, marking their qualification to join the Infantry Corps.

Never forget it. Done after a week of digging trenches etc. then bam, into hardcorp. Had thorns in my shirt for half of it, assault course in the filthy creek at the end nearly the demise of everyone. But man, that sense of pride getting that skippy badge still present 30 years on. Hardest job in the world, respect to all diggers

When I did it 20 years ago, it was on the back of an 8 day defensive exercise where we dug in a platoon position. That's what made Hard Corp tough. Well done lads.

I did this in 1987 as a section commander. We wore black GP boots with vulcanised rubber soles. Our M60 gunner dropped and I ended up carrying it plus his big pack until I got him to a medic. We all got soaked on the assault course and finished it in wet boots as the black GP’s held water.

At the end of the 10km sprint up Range Road at Singleton, I took my boots off and my heels came off with my socks. I’ve never known such pain since.

I was at Singo in 91, we stayed in the old and cold asbestos huts .Hardcorp took a couple of hours i think it was a 3 or 4am start and ofcause you get bacon and egg rolls at the end.

When they say you have to earn it. Does anyone know what the failure rate is? And when someone fails what happens, are they moved to another company that’s not as physically demanding?
