Well as I recall, way back in 1968, the best part was the long marches near Wagga. Never saw anyone cry at Kapooka.
The worst part was the bad relationships betwen the Army and the town. You'd go to a shop and people were nervous. There was a story that a RAAF apprentice had been beaten up and a bunch of Army guys went into town and beat people up - I don 't know whether that's true, but the town was - at that time - not friendly.
I came from a military family (father: USAAF B-24 nose gunner, mother RAAF nurse, sister: Army) so I had no problems fitting in.

A few more tips: Never be sorry for your mistake they hate the word sorry just own up and move on. Hold on to your Almond bars (chocolate rations) they are the best moral booster. When your platoon get to gold tabs they will demote the platoon to blue tabs as they want to crush your moral as a platoon. This is normal for them to do keep positive vibes running through platoon. Don't half ass PT especially if you're going to Singleton after Kapooka for IETs as the School Of Infantry has much harder PT. Example (Kapooka requires PFA: 15 push ups 45 sit ups and 7.5 on the beep test, Singo BFA: 45 push ups 100 situps and run 2.4km under 13 minutes.) Last tip is have as much fun as you can in Kapooka good luck with that one hahaha

Oh yeah here is another tip DO NOT CALL a BOMBADIER a Corporal or vice versa or they will rip you a new arsehole.

Pull-ups should be compulsory for the BFA -at least 20. The webbing run is usually the killer. Anyone can run in PT gear.
