George M. Cohan died from bladder cancer in 1942, the year the movie "Yankee Doodle Dandy" premiered. A special showing was arranged for him. It's so nice that happened for him and it was reported that he loved the movie. He was an icon and greatly admired here and abroad. His funeral was held at St. Patrick Cathedral in NYC and attended by thousands. Sadly, his sister Josie died in 1916 at age 39 from cardiovascular disease. They are both buried in the same private masoleum as their parents at Woodlawn Cemetery in NY. What an incredible talent he was. "Yankee Doodle Dandy" is definitely worth a look. James Cagney richly deserved his Best Actor Oscar for same.

My uncle Lewis used to sing this song for hours on end. We had to commit him when he started alleging to have written this song.

"My mother thanks you, my father thanks you, my sister thanks you, and I thank you." Authentic Americana from a time and a country that is gone and will never come back. We live in the twilight of the great Republic- it was great while it lasted. JMO.

I'm ashamed to say this, but I'm 35 years old now. And I just now recently watched Yankee Doodle Dandy for the first time. It is SUCH a good movie!! And to watch it all with the thought that ww2 was brewing up to its climax just then... the timing is just as perfect as can be for this movies release. I literally fell in love with that movie

I believe this is Cohan singing his own song. And yes, Cagney did a great imitation of Cohan's vocal intonation and unique dancing style.

Little known fact: Comedian Freddy Lewis used to sing this on first dates while pointing at his crotch. There was never a second date. xoxo The Clarences

Johnnie, get your gun
Get your gun, get your gun
Take it on the run
On the run, on the run
Hear them calling, you and me
Every son of liberty
Hurry right away
No delay, go today
Make your daddy glad
To have had such a lad
Tell your sweetheart not to pine
To be proud her boy's in line
Over there, over there
Send the word, send the word over there
That the Yanks are coming
The Yanks are coming
The drums rum tumming everywhere
So prepare, say a prayer
Send the word, send the word to beware
We'll be over, we're coming over
And we won't come back till it's over, over there
Johnnie, get your gun
Get your gun, get your gun
Johnnie show the Hun
Who's a son of a gun
Hoist the flag and let her fly
Yankee Doodle do or die
Pack your little kit
Show your grit, do your bit
Yankee to the ranks
From the towns and the tanks
Make your mother proud of you
And the old red, white and blue
Over there, over there
Send the word, send the word over there
That the Yanks are coming
The Yanks are coming
The drums rum tumming everywhere
So prepare, say a prayer
Send the word, send the word to beware
We'll be over, we're coming over
And we won't come back till it's over, over there.

A nation using a song to get people to go to war. It worked and I still can't believe this was humanity before my time. Amazing
