Wasp vs Wolf Spider

While looking out of my window this afternoon, I noticed a paralysed Wolf Spider being dragged across the lawn by a wasp. I knew that the wasp would look for a place to bury the spider, so I followed it. As expected, the wasp dug a small tunnel, inserted the spider, and then buried it alive.

Towards the end of the video, as the wasp fills the hole, it rapidly beats its abdomen against the gravel and some small rocks. I'm not exactly sure what this behaviour is. Perhaps egg-laying?

Love how the wasp just takes it time bringing the spider back, if there is an ant nearby, he grabs a quick snack and continues the mission!!! So cool!

Insects ain't dumb. That vibration of the abdomen is designed to make sure the dirt and the pebbles are settled in nicely and won't just blow away.

I've seen this scene play out with these pepsis wasp and huge wolf spiders. Always, it's either the spider loses or run as fast as they can out of their burrows to avoid the wasp. It's amazing how, after a millions years of evolution nature tells them "Don't bother, you can't win."

When a video starts out with a grave being dug, I know it's gonna be badass.

I can’t believe the spider hasn’t evolved enough to at least fight back, and stick those huge fangs into the wasp???

The rapid abdomen beats seem to be an effort to pulverize the ground and pack it down. Ovopositing all that time would seem unlikely.

Great video! Wasp and hornets do so much to keep the numbers of spiders and various insects in check. I see so many videos of people killing wasp and hornet nest with shotguns, flame throwers, Raid. etc. Nature has a food chain in place to maintain balance. Thank you for not spraying the wasp, spider and ants with Raid and allowing us to see nature at work.

It's a wonder those ants didn't just wait until the wasp had moved away from the site and then burrowed into the hole the paralyzed spider was in. The ants know where dinner is, they'll probably swarm over it if the wasp didn't pack down the entrance firmly enough. There is another video where the ants stole a paralyzed spider while the wasp was digging it's hole out, and then the wasp made the fatal mistake of wandering into an antlion's sand trap.
