As a pharmacist, I remember decades ago when Doctors first began to recommend calcium for premenopausal women to help prevent osteoporosis. The results were obvious and predictable. Since calcium competes with iron for absorption, and since women were losing iron during menstruation, a good portion of the women became anemic. So doctors tried to remedy the anemia by increasing the dose of iron, but the anemias were not overcome while the patient was still taking calcium supplements concomitantly. The same would apply to calcium vs magnesium absorption and other minerals.

Competing coabsorption, and the size of the molecule may play a role as to why calcium takes priority over magnesium, and possibly zinc & iron. Think of it like a coin change sorter of differing sized of hole slots where the smaller holes are closed to absorb smaller said minerals in this case due to calcium’s presence (rough analogy)

So if you wanna be anal over maximum bioavailability of nutrients, timing your calcium rich foods 2 hours before or after magnesium, iron, or zinc rich meals at a minimum will help (tea and coffee due to tannins and caffeine similarly get bound and block calcium & iron absorption with drinking them 1-2 hours before or after being a good rule of thumb)

Calcium supplements can also basically turn to cement in your arteries (never take more than 500mg at a time). I will _never_ supplement with calcium. I get most of mine from drinking 3 cups daily of whole milk, and I look forward to it daily!

Magnesium and Calcium don't oppose each other. They compete for absorption and calcium wins.

Unfortunately most of the plant milks have calcium added, usually in the form of calcium carbonate. So if you drink much almond milk, etc., you may be getting a pretty good dose of added calcium.

Mineral water has a combination of magnesium and calcium. They never have had that effect on me where I feel depleted. You might just be taking about supplements or not know enough about the elements.

There are good calcium sources and great calcium sources. Calcium from dairy is practically non-existent and instead is full of sugar and lectins where as calcium from plants such as collard greens mustard greens and turnip greens and Brussels sprouts and heads of cabbages is where true plant based calcium stems from. Magnesium while it is an essential nutrient, PLANT BASED CALCIUM rules bone health, heart and brain health and so many more functions in the body.
