The American Civil War explained in 3 minutes - mini history

Of the 34 U.S. states in February 1861, seven Southern slave-holding states were declared by their state governments to have seceded from the country, and the Confederate States of America was organized in rebellion against the U.S. constitutional government. The Confederacy grew to control at least a majority of territory in eleven states, and it claimed the additional states of Kentucky and Missouri by assertions from native secessionists fleeing Union authority. These states were given full representation in the Confederate Congress throughout the Civil War. The two remaining slave-holding states, Delaware and Maryland, were invited to join the Confederacy, but nothing substantial developed due to intervention by federal troops.

The war effectively ended on April 9, 1865, when Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at the Battle of Appomattox Court House. Confederate generals throughout the Southern states followed suit, the last surrender on land occurring June 23. Much of the South's infrastructure was destroyed, especially its railroads. The Confederacy collapsed, slavery was abolished, and four million black slaves were freed. The war-torn nation then entered the Reconstruction era in a partially successful attempt to rebuild the country and grant civil rights to freed slaves.

The war is one of the most studied and written about episodes in U.S. history, and remains the subject of cultural and historiographical debate. Of particular interest are the causes of the Civil War and the persisting myth of the Lost Cause of the Confederacy.

I really wish there wasn’t music playing in the background. Hard for me to follow along. Great video otherwise.

This would be perfect if there weren't meditation music playing more loudly than the speaker.

Just to clarify, it was not a civil war in the sense of two factions fighting for control of a country, as was the case in Russia in 1917 or Spain in 1936, but rather a separatist secessionist war.

Another incorrect thing about this video- he showed the confederate battle flag as the flag of the confederacy, that was not it. Like I said, it was their battle flag.

I really tried to watch but the music ruined it. Why? Take it out better production!

Good overview of the Civil War. A Teenager’s Guide to the Civil War: A History Book for Teens gives an engaging overview history of the war.

The Southern states didn't secede from the Union "in rebellion against the U.S. constitutional government". They seceded because the U.S. Government had largely abandoned the Constitution and the original nature of the Union itself: a voluntary compact among sovereign states.

Your very first statement about the cause was your very first lie. The primary cause of the Civil War was states' rights and overreach by the federal government, not slavery.

Not a civil war. A war between two nation's. Confederacy was its own country. The world bank, recognized it as such. They bank rolled both sides.

The term Civil War should be removed from the English language because the 2 words contradict each other, there's nothing Civil about any war regardless of who's involved. It would be better if history referred to our nation's sad chapter as The War of 1861.

The Civil war was not caused by slavery.
