This INSANE Total War Mod is EVERYTHING - SSHIP Review for Medieval 2 Total War

I thought I had discovered everything Medieval 2 had to offer, but no! The Stainless Steel Historical Improvement Project mod is simply fantastic (and yes, I realize I say Historical Immersion Project in the video, darn my CK2 modding mod playing days) and elevates what was already an awesome overhaul to true legendary status. SSHIP uses the original Stainless Steel as its base, and adds so much complexity, historical flavor and Total War goodness on top, that we're left with a mod that truly revolutionizes Medieval 2 all these years later - and yes, the mod is STILL being worked on!

In all seriousness, between SSHIP for Medieval 2 and MK1212AD for Attila, we have an amazing set of Medieval experiences available to us, two of which I sincerely hope Creative Assembly themselves take some great lessons from. Let me know what you think of SSHIP and this video in the comments, and don't forget to leave a like and subscribe to the channel! :)

I love that in the midst of the TWWH3 fiasco people are going back to med2 more and more with those outstanding mods. I played several versions and submods of Divide and Conquer for maybe a decade or so, and to me its the best total war experience. But this, this brings vanilla medieval to a whole new level. Now staring at the main menu. I guess i wont sleep a lot tonight.

Let’s hope medieval 2 gets an uncapped remaster like Rome did and we can finally get a full map total war gme

Thank you for this exciting presentation of the SSHIP 098 mod!

What I disliked most about the vanilla versions of M2TW was the historical imprecision, the anachronistic appearance of many units.
Trying to improve historical credibility was my obsession and that's why I became one of the SSHIP modders focusing on the visual aspect of the units.
The units have been reworked to improve immersion... and it's not over !
If I take care of the visual part, other modders work on the other aspects for even more historical immersion. For us, it's exciting. For players, I hope it's a good gaming experience !

I did a bit of work with the SSHIP team years ago, though I don't know if any of them are still working on it. Great to see it has had a couple releases this year. Some of my absolute favourite experiences playing Med2 were with SSHIP.

I've been really getting into this mod lately. At first the mechanics got pretty frustrating, but once I got used to them over time I've actually really grown to appreciate and enjoy them. Was just a taste to get acquired to. Especially like how this mod has been the only solution to the game encompassing total war steamroll I've seen, and can really wear you thin the larger you expand

Having a blast now sorting everyone's little fief titles like a nerd and having to take the time to build up little Norman strongholds as Sicily!

It's great to see this mod still lives and is getting such attention! I contributed probably 12 years ago by patching in unit rosters and touching up some Lithuania city placement/naming, among other things. I'd be surprised if any of the work I did still lives in the mod, but I'm still proud of the (everchanging) team nonetheless :)

Loving this mod.

When I have to put an army together it always feels like you are preparing for a campaign.

I would recruit a unit from a few settlements so as to not fully deplete any of them in-case of emergency, which leads to a greater visual diversity. In a army where fully mailed Spearman from Paris fight besides unupgraded Spearmen from Toulouse, supporting a core of golden chevron foot knigths I've been moving around since the start of that save, all coming together under the command of a general I'm sending on the field in the hope of solving his drinking problem 😂

I wish you could rename individual units like in Empire, cause some of these units could tell a story.

The Freecam mod has reinvigorated Medieval 2 alongside mods like this, the graphics are just fine for me since I grew up playing games with far worse graphics than this.

It realistically the best revamp of Med 2. The politics take getting used to but the new system keeps the late game fresh. Also the units both faction based and mercenary are unbelievably detailed. The economy is a bit daunting at first but is not as hard to use as it first comes off. I’d say it’s an all around solid mod well worth playing.

Playing this mod as Lithuania was amazing. I actually lost in the end but it was one of the best campaign experiences I've ever had. Filled with cool battles too. SSHIP really plays incredibly well. The couple flaws that I remember, thr biggest of which was an odd way the BAI disengaged by going backwards, but that might have been fixed. Some unit skins are vanilla and some are new. While both are great, it does give a feeling of thematic inconsistency. Otherwise, it's a really great, functionally great experience.

This mod is awesome, it brings more depth and an extra challenge to Stainless Steel. I`m currently playing a Crusader campaign, and I really enjoy the fact that I have to micromanage garrisons/important battles and that every decision has to be spot on, especially on the harder difficulties. Props to the modding team for putting in the effort into the GOAT total war game !

Personally I think we’re entering a new era of medical 2 modding these are the mods that people have worked on for a decade plus or so and they’re just finally playable this along with tsardoms are telling soon I’m sure we’ll get some more mods just as quality as these ones

Great video, good to see the mod is still being developed. and love what they've done with unit costs and replenishment - adds historical realism by turning armies into a much more valuable asset and war waging into a matter of life and death, all as it should be. thanks for the video.

I love sship, both the units and gameplay are really great. Even on the more gamy side, one thing i kinda didnt like in stainless steel plain was how quickly enemies chain routed and how absurdly powerful cavalry was. In SSHIP chain routing is still possible, but it isnt inevitable if units are well formed alongside others, and cav is still appropriately powerful for a medieval game, but isn’t like a hot knife through EVERYTHING, including stationary braced shields in defence mode. Also, I absolutely love the early era look. pre great helm visored helmet knights are beautiful.

I do wish the teutonic order was in it though. that was my favorite looking faction in stainless steel.

I’ve just downloaded this thanks to your video and I’m really enjoying this so far! I’ve played some with the original Stainless Steel but it kept crashing so I eventually abandoned it. This one is way more stable and it has so much depth to it! You really need to be thoughtful of your actions and take a lot of things into account. I also enjoy that it’s more slow paced, I’m a player that likes to take his time to strengthen his empire before expanding further so this mod really fits me. And I also want to highlight how good the music is! It really helps you to immerse yourself in medieval life of Europe🤗

This is funny, I just started playing Medieval 2. I started playing the franchise with Empire total war (which remains my favourite to this day), but then I went trying Rome 1 (which I loved) and now Medieval 2. At first I didn't really understand why so many people loved this game so much, but after getting more hours into it I'm starting to see why, such a lovely game. I have played it only vanilla, but when I finish my current campaign I'll try the mods :)

Beautiful video mate. I adore SSHIP and only just started it last week. It’s a close tie between this and Divide Et Impera for Rome2 as my favourite TW experience
