Just got back from a 16 days vacation in Japan (began the journey in Akita, ended in Fukuoka). Love your channel and your advise on traveling on Shinkansen was so helpful. Please keep up the great videos. 💜💜💜😁

Thank-you for sharing your time and experience with us in the live Q & A. I've lived in Japan before and I learned new things. It's amazing that one can travel from Tokyo to the termini of every shinkansen line except for those in the JR Kyushu zone (Kagoshima Chuo & Nagasaki) without changing trains.

Thank you for the marathon Q & A, so helpful and informative. I’ve learned that my family can save a fair amount on fares by purchasing a JRWEST-all area 7 day pass that just covers the middle part of our trip!

Been watching your channel for information on Japan travel. Thank you for taking the time to educate travellers. May I ask if it is more economical and convenient to get a 7 days Kansai Hokuriku Area Pass if our itinerary is Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Fukui and back to Osaka? Thank you.

the Toyama to Takayama train is the Hida Limited Express, sometimes the train stops at Inotani station then it switch to operated by JR west and its own Limited express train. Timing plays the key on this route, sometime the Train stops from Toyama to Takayama straight, but sometimes it forces you to Change Train at inotani station. I will say try to book Toyama to Inotani, then Inotani to Takayama. Also Inotani to Takayma runs on both regular train and limited express train. The time difference between 2 trains are only 10mins different but the price is 1200 Yens more on the limited express - unreserved seat ticket. The Toyama to Inotani section are the same as the Inotani to Takayma, that route has both regular and limited express train. Time difference is round 15mins and the price is 760 Yens more on the limited express - unreserved seat ticket. So please look at the time, that part runs very different than from Takayama to Nagoya. Enjoy your train trip in Japan. Hope this helps

1:52:00 George is way braver than me, 9 years I lived in Japan and never went to a public onsen (my wife did it once, good to experience but never do it again - stick with private ones)

Hi George & Heidi, thank you so much for the helpful tips. I’ve a question hoping you can help.

I’m planning a trip to Osaka from Tokyo by riding the Shinkansen on a Sunday morning. My hotel is close to the Asakusabashi Station, Google suggests taking the Asakusa Line from Asakusabashi Station to Shinagawa Station, then transferring to the Shinkansen. Since I am traveling with a large suitcase, I’ll need to reserve a Shinkansen seat with oversize luggage space online (Is SmartEx the best option? Not sure yet if my credit card will work). I see that on the JR website when I search for a route from Shinagawa to Shin-Osaka, it shows me two fares (Basic & Ltd Express) combined into one.

If I associate an IC card with the Shinkansen ticket ahead of time, and start my route by boarding the Asakusa line at Asakusabashi station with my IC card, transfer from the Keikyu line to JR side of the Shinagawa station by taping in with the same IC card and then go through the Shinkansen gate again with same IC card. Will I be able to tap out at Shin-Osaka with IC card without a need to settle any ticket fare with the train station staff? I’m trying to avoid doing that due to language barrier.

Thank you.

Thank you for all your videos. I haven't been back since 1992! I'm finally bringing my adult kids for their college graduation trip that was missed in 2020. We are flying into Narita and leaving from KIX. Staying in Tokyo and planning to go to Disney and Mt. Fuji for a day. We want to visit Hiroshima when we get to Kyoto and we are staying in Osaka two nights before we leave. What passes should we get . The local Tokyo Subway pass? Do you recommend getting the Kansai Hiroshima pass? You mentioned puttng the Suica card on our iphone. How do we do that so we don't have to stand in line at the airport. Also, where are your links we can use to purchase like Klook? SmartEX?

Does GO taxi accept short drive, for example less than 10 minute drive? We have luggage and need to get to train station from hotel, so taxi would be a good choice for us.
