See like an artist, think like a designer, feel like a human: T. Kelly Wilson at TEDxBloomington

An artist and architect, T. Kelly Wilson currently serves as the Director of the Indiana University Center for Art and Design in Columbus. In his TEDxBloomington talk, he speaks of stepping out of his graduate architecture program, "arguing his way into a drawing class" and learning "a deeper order" of seeing and designing. He proposes students take parallel studios, one in a serious design inquiry and one in a serious artistic inquiry, with synthesis created in the mind of the individual. Kelly argues that the division between "design" and "art" is false and a disservice to all. A tenured associate professor in the IU Department of Apparel Merchandising and Interior Design, he has recently been twice awarded the Paul Rudolph Fellowship at Auburn University. Wilson held an Associate Professorship at Harvard Graduate School of Design where he taught design, visual studies and co-directed the Harvard Rome Program. His drawings and paintings are shown in New York and in Boston. Wilson is also a principle of 3HG+, an architectural and urban design practice involved with international urban projects.

About TEDx, x=independently organized event. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

T. Kelly Wilson, I do not know if you will see this comment, but  I will hope that you do. I happened to come upon this video tonite as I am doing some planning for my own students. For many years, I have wanted to tell you how much you impacted my way of teaching seeing as drawing to my students. You were my drawing teacher at RISD in the fall of 1993. Thank you for teaching me to pass along the passion for observation, finding the inner structure, and the intertwining of the moment and the experience. I would rock on my toes... Thanks!!!    Julie Wollaeger Schulte
