As an older marine I attended land nav course in the mountains (bridgport), desert (29 palms) and several jungles (Malaysia, Thailand, Okinawa, etc).... I found the canopies in the jungles in southeast Asia made things very difficult to tell where you were and you had to rely on foot count and your compass and your map a lot of the time as well as marking each terrain elevation to get close to your extraction point or bivouac destination.Wet, a lot of bugs and very dark during the days. Add a night course with shitty NVG's and the training gets real interesting.

Amphib used to be 2 Phase. I messed up terribly by falling asleep during the Land Nav classroom knowledge portion and yes I caused everyone to suffer….

Thank you Sargent for all your teaching and encouragement. I was BRC in the '60s after my Field Med Training as a Corpsman. Only one aspect of my training I did not like was running with a rope around my waist and pulled by a instructor when i failed to keep up with my squad. From that point on i maid sure i never was behind any one. Loved being a Marine Corpsman!!! ooorah!

LandNav LandNav Landnav! You must endure that everywhere you will go, especially when you get to Ranger School, you don't wanna give the RI (i.e. me) a reason to send your ass crying back to the Corps. because you get your squad lost.
My best advice is get some topo and/or imagery of your area and start plotting courses for your runs and ruck marches that will help A LOT in preparation and get you used to the differences between your imagery/topo and the actual terrain you're trying to navigate through.

My recruiter definitely didn’t want me going Recon for some reason. He literally told me everything bad they do to you and even had a marine that dropped from BRC come in and tell me that they literally drown you.
