Journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones has decided to turn down the controversial offer from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

She instead accepted a tenured position at a historically Black institution. Marc Lamont Hill, host of BNC's "Black News Tonight," joins "BNC Live" with Laverne McGee to discuss Hannah-Jones' decision. The award-winning journalist was not offered tenure after conservatives were upset about her creation of the "1619 Project" for The New York Times. After controversy and public outcry, Hannah-Jones was finally offered tenure, but she turned it down to launch a new Center for Democracy and Journalism at Howard University.

A conservative think tank reported on her labor dispute without her permission. She tried to maintain confidentiality. NHJ has handled the dispute with exceptional grace. I am happy she will be working where she is truly wanted.

This is a HUGE get for HBCU and Howard U. Ms. Hannah-Jones is a brilliant leader and should be well respected at Howard U. Congrats. I will be trying to convince my son (10yr old) to go to Howard just to be in an environment with someone with the courage of a Nikole Hannah-Jones. This is a great decision and win for us all. She would have been lost at U.N.C.

That's what I'm talking about!! Nikole didn't deserve them. F@#k them. I was devastated when I heard she wouldn't get tenured. Then I hoped they'd eventually get it, but she'd tell them "No thanks. I'M OUT! When I heard decided she WANTED to go to Howard, I cried. That's where we want her to be. Our legend Stephanie Mills says "I want to be celebrated, NOT tolerated!" Welcome to blackness & truth. I love it!

Didn't Marc Lamont Hill explain why she brought it to light. Why ask why she still walked away?

When work do us wrong, we are supposed to call them out. She did absolutely right. They should have done right the first time. He is absolutely 100% correct.

I agree wholeheartedly with Marc. Nicole shined a spotlight on who makes the decisions behind the scenes.

I'm glad Nikole Hannah-Jones turned down that measly job at UNC. She will be a wonderful addition to the Howard University teaching staff.

NH-J was offered minimum tenure at UNC (which then yanked it away, and then with egg all over its face offered it again), and a fully-endowed full professorship at Howard. Which would you pick?

Well said Mr Hill. This needed to be made public. Black have to be better and work harder 😔

Benjamin Dauod that's an interesting observation. I wouldn't have ever noticed that but that's only because I personally don't look at mens lips but MLH fights for your rights to do so. That means that you my brother can look at all the men you want to and their lips because it's your right to do so. I applaud you Benjamin Daoud for noticing the two gentleman's lips and being bold enough to speak on it. Congratulations to the sister choosing to take her talents to Howard University
