On some tanks (and only on some) if you switch to the secondary gun it works

I thought it’s a different button. I think in key binds you can set it up, tho could be wrong.

I was confused on this aswell when I first stared playing USSR! So the reason for this is because the Hull machine gun in the shermans is a 5.56 anti-personnel light machine gun which is (as implied) an anti-personnel gun which will not help you in any way shape or form in this game since you won't be shooting personnel. "What about the open top flak trucks?" that's what your 7.62 machine gun is for! Most tanks have an anti-personal (see the Hull of all shermans, most t-34s, kv series, most Japanese medium, alot of the British tanks like the Churchill and the sherman firefly, and so on) and none of them fire because you don't need it.
