Summary:

Dialectical materialism is one of the most foundational and unique elements of Marxism. Marx and Engels pioneered this methodology in order to create a theory of social and economic conflict and change. In this video, we cover the historical origins of dialectics, starting with the ancient Greeks, and then move on to Hegelian dialectics, including Hegel’s understanding of Geist and historical development. We then explore the material basis of Marxian dialectics and what Engels meant when he said that “the dialectic of Hegel was turned over; or rather, turned off its head, on which it was standing, and placed upon its feet.”

Chapters (Timestamps):

02:26 2) Historical Background
08:52 3) The Dialectics of Marx and Engels

Thank you for talking about this important concept but I like to share my understanding about the subject (shortly):

Dialectical Materialism is a reduction from Marx methodology. Marx has never used it.
Dialectic: Dialectic logic and method:
{Individuality, [Particularity, Universality]}, [Concrete, Abstract], & [abstraction, concretization],
{[Part, Whole], Individual} and [synthetization, decomposition],
{[Appearance, Essence], Actuality},
{[Quality, Quantity], Boundaries},
....
{[Analytic Cognition, Synthetic Cognition], Dialectic Cognition}, & {[Analytic Method, Synthetic Method], Dialectic Method}.

Materialism: Matter not only exist prior to idea (mind) but also determines (conditions) idea.
In the 'Theses on Feuerbach' There are many dialectic logic used and important ones are:

[Cognition, Praxis],
[Materialism, Idealism],
[Empiricism, Rationalism],
[Monism, Dualism],
[Theory, Practice]. Any theory not only originate by (empirical) practice but also is validated by practice.

Btw, worth pointing out Hegel doesn't have a dialectical method, he never even said 'dialectics', and the pattern of what may resemble 'dialectics' in Hegel is actually just a result of Hegel's true method that he described in the introduction of Science of Logic termed by other philosophers as 'imminent critique'--Antonio Wolf has a good series on the introduction to actual Hegel if people are curious.

What is up with the audio? It sounds warbly, and windy. Like the input isn't fully plugged in, or the gain is super high, or the audio is being recorded through a webcam.

it is such a great material to study, it synthesizes the ideas in a really neat and easy-to-undestand fashion, although the audio quality sounds bizarre

the sound is a bit weird, but the video context is amazing

Good job, comrade! I have also started a similar journey, to simplify Marxist concepts without jargon. And I loved this.

Two suggestions:
1. Try to improve the audio a little bit.
2. May be... in case of long text / quotes, don't make it like an overlay but use a separate frame over a dark background. Feels like... well, more impactful and focused.

Just opinions. If you are okay with your style, more power to you! Great job.

A. Turn the studio lights down and get her some water. Damn Amherst got people in the hotbox over there preparing them for the interrogation room or something lol

B. God damn she's got a lions mane 🦁

C. The audio is wonky but I guess other commenters already said that. (Maybe decrease high high, and the high mids also. And the processing made it sound bad, and the mic may suck)

D. I ain't been to the Amherst/Hadley area for a while, it's beautiful out there, make sure y'all take some time for yourselves and go out to the lake with some comrades.

Why should you completely own what you produce with your own labor if your borrowing the equipment and the raw materials have been purchased by someone else? Thats not fair either.

I think socialism and capitalism are both guilty of figuring this out. And socialists never answer this question especially when they come to power. Labor changes are usually some of the slowest things to happen in socialist societies. In fact former fuedal socities like the USSR just instil state backed and owned capitalism.

If i borrow someones workshop and their materials and then they go on to do the work of selling those materials it makes sense we should BOTH get a cut. Capitalism simply gives too much cut to the capitalist. Instead of siezing the means of production we should even the distribution of the fruits of production

Yes, all bullshit if you ask me. As an Economics Major back in the early 90s, most my friends used to argue these positions in Social and Political Ethics courses and classes. .. Really sorry to say this, but 33 years later, most of them barely have enough to make their mortgage payment and lease a decent car.

The Rule: Figure out your own beliefs about Society, then with every Dollar you make, Invest $.75 Cents, then Live off the .25 Cents and before not too long, Compound Interest slowly makes you a millionaire. Hope this helps. Peace ✌️

50 seconds in and it's wrong Marx stole dialectics from Hegel.

I wish Karl Marx have wrote anything about the dialectic of “freeloading.” 😂

Does anybody else find it amusing that she can get through this entire video with a straight face? It’s such nonsense.

It’s like making a very long video about how the earth really is flat without even cracking a hint of a smile.
