How to Prepare Fresh Ginger and Turmeric

Known for their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, ginger and turmeric are amazing root vegetables that are equally good for you and great tasting.

Chef Billy Parisi demonstrates how simple it is to prepare and use fresh ginger and turmeric in your daily culinary creations.

How to Prepare Ginger
1. Remove the outside peel of the ginger with a peeler or a paring knife. Be careful as the shape and texture of the ginger root can make it tricky to peel.

2. Place the peeled ginger root on a cutting board and prepare to cut it. Ginger has long, thin threads that run throughout the root, which makes it challenging to cut. To make things easier, turn the ginger root sideways and cut it in half. Then turn it one more time and slice it as thin as possible.

3. Serve the ginger in these thin slices or stack the slices as you would sliced carrots, turn it again and mince.

*Ginger is great in vinaigrettes, stir fry, soup and broth, sautéed vegetables or used as a spice blend to coat a roast.

How to Prepare Turmeric
1. Remove the outer layer of skin with a peeler.

2. Once peeled, set the turmeric root on a cutting board and thinly slice it into rounds. There’s no need to turn it first, like the ginger, because turmeric does not have thin threads that run throughout the root.

3. If you prefer turmeric finely grated rather than sliced, use a microplaner to grate the turmeric into small minced pieces.

*Turmeric is great sautéed with vegetables, combined with other pungent spices like curry, added to soups or mixed with honey and added to chicken.

I add fresh, ginger and fresh turmeric to my daily juicing. It's fantastic. I also use beat root, fresh carrots, fresh spinach, fresh pineapple for the sweetness, Granny Smith apples and red apples and an orange for that little bit of sweet acid. It's a meal in itself.

I have frozen ginger grated with the peel…never had any troubles with the peel, other than peeling it! I’m a lazy cook.

I'm a guy, I don't have as much spare time is this guy does. When I get turmeric and little fingers, I just rinse them off, soak them for five minutes and eat them. I don't bother taking the skins off, the same way I eat skins of Sweet potatoes.

I appreciate if you let me know what would be the best electric Grinder to use for grating Fresh Turmeric and Ginger Roots? I have used Magic NutriBullet, but it keeps getting stuck and I Keep having to open and stirred it. I use "Grinded Turmeric and Ginger' a lot and need an easier way than manually grating them.

Turmeric can stain everything... I recommend you use gloves so your hands don't spread the stains around

my turmeric fingers are hard as rocks. Can they be steamed first? or otherwise softened in some way?

Safer is scraping the skin off with a spoon, very easy and if you slip you will not cut your finger.

The best way to remove the peel is to use a spoon!

Most people just scrape the skin off with a spoon

BEWARE! I wore gloves and still got yellow fingers. My kitchen tools are orange. This stuff is greasy, waxy, thick on my microplane. Never again!
