The best thing about this movie was that nothing and absolutely nothing was a throwaway joke.

German Shepherds? They were fighting at the end.
Captain K's battle costume? He wore it at the end.

This was such a subtle and beautiful scene. If anyone had any doubts that they were gay, in the last scene they charge into battle wearing their costumes then both have pink triangles as part of their costumes which is how Nazis market homosexuals. Just beautiful, subtle writing.

This scene actually is very clever because the German Shepperd was a breed of dog relatevely new at the time. but nevertheless despite being a very popular breed creation the name German Shepperd was not entirely associated with dogs at the time, It was created by Capt Max Von Stephanitz in late 1899, Trough mixing other existing breeds of dogs to create a working and highly adaptable breed, so at the time when Captain K asked for German Shepperds it was logical for Finkel to think the Cpt really wanted actual Shepperds and not dogs
