Reports say Apple is giving Siri an upgrade for iOS 18, and the iPhone could incorporate ChatGPT and Gemini AI software. After a week of cringeworthy AI news, CNET’s Bridget Carey worries Apple might ruin Siri if it starts sounding like other AI assistants and forgetting what really matters.

Disagree. Filler words are a crucial part of our language, and just as they allow us time to think of the next word, they allow LLMs like GTP and Gemini to answer without waiting for the whole answer to generate and then say it all in one go, which would be more annoying.

I get why you and many others don’t need a more conversational Smart Assistant. However, those who live alone, especially the elderly, will very much benefit from having a Smart Assistant that feels far more human and lets them feel a bit less alone. Granted, what will seem wonderful for grandma may still be creepy for the hermit like 18 year old.

This is an easy fix: allow personas. Allow the user to pick from various personas for their smart assistant and everyone wins.

If you don't want your voice assistant to flirt with you, what you want is voice control. You just don't want it because it's a female voice, switch to voice 1 and Siri will greet you instead of your husband.

Yeah. Bridget might sound a bit too Ick’d by AI but she is right the race to the AGI who wins our business is not by flirting and sounding friendly but rather by being respectful of our privacy, informative and productive. Otherwise we are falling into a trap.
