I spent years as an investigator, first as a PI then in government. I once found a guy who did almost everything right in order to disappear except for two things...when he was ready to vanish he first tried to kill his wife by running her over with his car...twice, in their driveway. She didn't die and later when I interviewed her I asked her what his hobbies were and she told me he was a avid dart player, had been playing in clubs and bars for decades and always belonged to dart teams, couldn't live without it. Even had his own custom made darts. She also told me that he loved the mountains.
So we started in the nearest state with a mountain range (betting that he hadn't gone too far) and the smaller towns/cities near the mountains, there weren't that many. Then we put together a list of dart clubs and tournaments that operated in those areas. We found him in the third community we worked, in the very first bar, one that held dart tourneys regularly.

I am not the expert but if you want to disappear do it twice. Relocate some place 2-5 hours away. You do not have to hide just not be around the normal places, normal people. After every one has gotten used to you not being around. Start setting up a new life in a new location and leave the old one behind.
