When you're the first in your family to go to university

I was the first person in my family to go to university (aka a 'first-gen' university student). This brought with it quite a few moments and difficulties that I think non-first gen students might not know about. I've noticed a lot of women in STEM that I look up to have often already had a woman in their family smash the university glass ceiling for them. I never had that so I think evaluating what effect that might have had on us is interesting to think about.

I am a first generation university student (the first in my entire family lineage, actually). Only 25% of the student population at my university are first-gen students so straight away I already felt like a minority. This was combined with being an ethnic minority too and a very underrepresented one at that for my degree course, so my time at university has been very isolating to say the least! I did get the maximum maintenance loan so thankfully my financial situation was generally good, but I found that I had to figure everything out for myself - I study chemistry and like you I knew it would lead to opportunities but I didn't really know what. I feel like I'm a lot more self aware and independent as a result of my background however, but I do wish that I had a guide sometimes.
