Kosem Sultan was the wife of Ahmed I and the mother of Murad IV and Ibrahim I, who ruled as sultans in the 17th century. She was also the grandmother of Mehmed IV, who became the sultan at the age of six after his father Ibrahim I was deposed and executed. Kosem Sultan was the de facto ruler of the empire for decades, as she wielded great influence over her sons and grandson. She was known as the Valide Sultan, or the Queen Mother, and was respected and feared by many.
However, her authority was challenged by Turhan Sultan, who was the wife of Ibrahim I and the mother of Mehmed IV. Turhan Sultan was also a Valide Sultan, but she had a different vision for the empire than Kosem Sultan. She wanted to reform the administration, curb the corruption, and strengthen the military. She also wanted to secure her son’s throne from potential rivals and conspiracies. Turhan Sultan was supported by the Janissaries, the elite soldiers of the empire, who were loyal to her and her son.
The conflict between Kosem Sultan and Turhan Sultan escalated into a bloody coup in 1651, when Turhan Sultan ordered the assassination of Kosem Sultan in her palace. This marked the end of Kosem Sultan’s reign and the beginning of Turhan Sultan’s era. Turhan Sultan became the first woman in Ottoman history to rule as a regent for her son, who was still a minor. She also became the most influential woman in Ottoman history, as she successfully managed the affairs of the state and defended the empire from external threats.
