Learn more about the hidden history of Saint Martin's Cathedral or Domchurch in Utrecht, Holland. After the renovation of the church in 2018-2024, the tower looks bright and beautiful again. We cover the history of the tower and church, starting in 1253, and via the Union of Utrecht, Desiridius Erasmus and its history of gay meeting place, we cover the most important world events the church has seen. We cover Desiridius Erasmus, Louis XIV, the sodomy (homosexuality) trials, and ofcourse the storm that was not a tornado on 1674. We finish off with a 3D reconstruction of the church as it looked before 1674, with a complete nave connected to the tower.

The 3D model is photographed and scanned in with Meshroom, and actually is just a 3D puzzle of the original tower edited in Blender afterwards. The puzzle is for sale here:

Talking about Erasmus. He was just three years old when he left Rotterdam and never came back. Because of those 3 years Rotterdam called a bridge, a hospital, an university, a park and on and on… to this toddler. His father was a married priest from Gouda and his housekeeper, also from Gouda had to flee Gouda because she was pregnant from this priest. The second time! 🎉 There was so much shame so she gave birth in Rotterdam and then went back to Gouda.

thank you so much!! great story told in a great way. i hope all stays like history left it to us, because not only I fears that rebuilding the ship will bring ego's forward that will demand to add their own signature, concepts, statements. we dont need that to be proud! but thanks again

Mooie dronebeelden! Nog een punt ter mogelijke verbetering; in mijn ogen zijn de kleuren veel te verzadigd gemaakt en erg onnatuurlijk geworden, wat m.i. afbreuk doet aan de verder spectaculaire filmbeelden.

Nice images of my city. Some minor details in the story are incorrect but still very interesting. Greetings from Utrecht The Netherlands.

I used to pass it 'van achter de Dom' every day, because my school was on the Nieuwe Gracht. The street there actually carries that name 'Achter de Dom'. And yes, I'm gay also.🤨😆
The reason why the Dutch didn't build higher was more a political decision, than not being able. It was more about costs, then anything else. And also pride. My great grandfather built a building in Amsterdam, that had to be taken down because it was too high. That really says it all.

Hoi, mooie dronebeelden, helder verhaal.

'From the sins of Catholics' ... in the 13th and 14th century, almost everybody in the Netherlands were Catholic. Don't forget the tradesmen! Their unions were influential and as money was collected for the construction of this tower - the same amount of money was used to pay and even educate masons, carpenters, clock makers, artists, glas makers, traders, transport providers and the like: constructing the church fueled the local economy. Large churches also paid for the investments in tools, wagons and improved housing of local artisans who were educated by the experience often even systematically. Large church projects were important for cities, provided status and honor too. These were economical projects besides spiritual ones.
