Combat Outpost Keating was exactly that—a soldier’s nightmare, isolated in an Afghan valley and boxed in by mountains that gave the enemy the perfect vantage point. It was like fighting from the bottom of a well, and everyone knew disaster was only a matter of time.

I'm a retired warrant. I get that a letter of reprimand can wreck a career, but honestly, putting those guys in that position without support was beyond reckless. This deserved more than a slap on the wrist—someone should face jail time. What are your thoughts?

I was an NCO in the army. I was in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the worst officers are the ones coming fresh from college. On one occasion, I disobeyed orders from a new lieutenant. I was reprimanded and demoted in rank. However, none of my men died that day. I got my rank back when a higher officer took my side. The lieutenant was sent back to the States.

The person who selected that defensive position broke many principles of defence.

I always wondered who was the Idiot that chose that location for a base instead of getting the high ground to protect their troops. God bless our troops! Thank you for fighting against all odds!

I can tell you exactly which BG approved this plan, and hell no he didn’t ever get held accountable. He went on to become the Chairman, JCofS actually. And pissed all over that job and never was held accountable for fucking it all up as well.

American Generals always seem to prefer to be the fish in the barrel instead of controlling the high ground. Ple Que, Khe Sahn just to name a couple. They did it in Afghanistan everywhere. BS would stop if pentagon was ordered into the Box

I read the book by SST Romesha. I have to shake my head at the logistal inadequacies of this outpost! Obviously, these men evacuation was not considered to be high priority, even though the men made request after request.

This was like cornering a mouse into a tight spot and he has nowhere to go. This was a death trap and these men faced it head on with nothing but grit and bravery!

Romesha's book is heart stopping.

A private who loses a rifle gets a greater consequence than an officer who got people killed by making stupid decisions.

After 20 yrs in the Navy... I learned that many Officers have a God mindset not caring about anything but their own career

In other words, the officers responsible for this debacle weren't held accountable.

One of these “disgraced officers” is now the Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army.

Officers should be held accountable for dumb ass decisions that could have cost the lives of every man and woman on the ground under their command

I was deployed in southern Hungary on the Croatian border with the 67th Combat Support Hospital way back when. Our hospital commander was relieved for cause after failing to evacuate by air a civilian contractor that had pneumonia because he couldn’t get a guaranteed return date for the Respiratory Therapist that would have to accompany him because he was intubated.
Eventually they tried evacuating this contractor. I personally helped load him onto the C-130 he was to fly back on. I remember watching the plane take off, get maybe 1000 feet up in the air, turn on a dime, and do an emergency landing on the same runway it had just taken off from. The patient had coded and was expired by the time we went back to the plane to unload him.

Only certain people are held accountable in the military. Usually those NOT in the good ole boy club.

What wasn't mentioned was they had NO close air support and NO artillery! There's books and movies out there NON-FICTION books and movies.

Great movie called the outpost. It’s all about this place and battle.

Sun Tzu said that trapped men fight with extreme ferocity. Generals often burned the ships that brought the troops to battle, so they would know the only way home is through the enemy.

Why exactly were these troops turned into fish in a barrel? 🤢
