Many of my family members served in the Iraqi army during the war. My dad told me we couldn’t use the air defenses because, whenever we turned them on, the Americans would target them directly. He mentioned that the Russian tanks were problematic; their engines frequently overheated and stopped during combat, unlike the American tanks, which also had a longer firing range. He said that we kept shooting, but our tanks couldn’t hit the American ones due to the range difference. Additionally, he noted that during dogfights, the Russian MiGs and Sukhois would sometimes stop shooting or even shut down mid-air. The American warfare and hacking systems were incredibly advanced. He explained that we were using outdated Soviet weapons to combat these new technologies and knew from the beginning that we would lose due to the significant technological gap between 1980s and 2000s weaponry. Especially Under the government of Saddam Hussein, Internet access was tightly controlled and very few people were thought to be online; in 2002 it was estimated that only 25, 000 Iraqis used the Internet.
