William took charge of Wayne Enterprises after the murder of Thomas Wayne and told young Bruce that he would wait for him to grow up and run it. However, when Bruce Wayne left Gotham City, Earle had him declared dead and took Wayne Enterprises public. It was only the fact that Alfred Pennyworth was the designated trustee/inheritor of Bruce's assets and majority shareholding of Wayne Enterprises by Bruce himself in his will that delayed that plan. Earle was cold blooded, ruthless and was pleased that Bruce had returned to the company, if for no other reason, then to have him within reach so that he could keep him under control and out of the way. To that end, Earle was happy to grant Bruce's request for a "job" in the Applied Sciences Unit.

This is why 'Batman Begins' shows it's a great start of a great franchise. It balances every aspect of the Batman/Bruce Wayne mythos: his detective skills, his playboy persona, his tech side and his billionaire status. Pulled off perfectly.

This scene shows Bruce Wayne's self confidence : He interrupted the board's meeting and talked to Earl (CEO) without looking to his face while toying with his secretary !

I love how Earl is not written as an inherently bad person/villain but just a guy trying to move a business forward and find what needs to be acted upon

So many other movies and tv shows have tried to copy this, Tomb Raider, Iron Fist and even the new James Bond movie. Goes to show just how influential the Dark knight trilogy was.
