Lion Air Flight 610 was a Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft that crashed into the Java Sea off the coast of Indonesia on October 29, 2018, killing all 189 people on board. It was the second fatal crash involving the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft type.
The crash occurred shortly after takeoff from Jakarta, Indonesia, on a domestic flight to Pangkal Pinang. The aircraft experienced multiple control inputs and lost altitude before crashing into the water. The investigation into the cause of the crash revealed that a new flight control system, the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS), played a significant role. MCAS, designed to prevent stalls, incorrectly interpreted data from a faulty sensor, leading to repeated nose-down commands that the pilots were unable to counteract.
The Lion Air Flight 610 crash led to the grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX worldwide, and extensive changes were made to the aircraft's software and pilot training procedures. The investigation into the crash also highlighted the need for increased oversight and transparency in the aviation industry.
