About Alco
The ALCO DL560C is a series of diesel-electric locomotives featuring AC electric transmission. These locomotives were designed by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) and produced under license by Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW) in Varanasi, India. They were specifically manufactured for the Indian Railways and belong to various classes, including WDM-2, WDM-3A/2C, WDM-3D, and WDG-3A, to be utilized in railway operations across India.

These locomotives are equipped with a powerful 16-cylinder ALCO 251 B or C diesel engine. In the early 1960s, Indian Railways sought a dependable diesel locomotive to gradually replace its steam locomotive fleet. For this purpose, equal numbers of ALCO's DL560C and EMD's SD24 locomotives (40 each) were selected for testing and trials. Subsequently, more locomotives of each type were acquired for further evaluation.

Indian Railways had a strong interest in local production to reduce dependence on imports for such crucial railway equipment.
