Furiously smoking ALCO - American Locomotive.Holy Smoke,Holy chugging !! That was a true eruption of thick black smoke from a worn out Turbo. The deemer erupts the smoke right exactly while passing the Level crossing, wonder what were the after effects post the locomotive passed by the people out there. The ALCo was heading towards the nearest Diesel Shed for check up.

0:15 And the woman walking  into  the smoke was never seen or heard from again.

Looks to me like a typical blown turbo. Insufficient air to really run well + engine oil burning in the exhaust manifold = thick black smoke and a rather weak engine.

I am surprised that they didn't shut the lead unit off and use the second unit to push the leader somewhere to have the engine repaired.

First generation ALCo's suffered from turbocharger lag and almost always smoked like this on acceleration. In America they held the title of honorary steam engine because of this.

For a 60 year old diesel engine it sure does go fast. Love AlCO's, especially the smoke show

I think this is normal on old Alco and GE Locomotives. It's just the lack of a boost compensator or so called low manifold pressure (boost) fuel delivery adjustment for the injection. If you suddenly give the engine power, it gets enough diesel - fuel for full power, but hasn't enough air to burn it properly. On the video you can already hear the turbo wind up. I think after arround 1 minute the turbo should deliver enough air to let the exhaust clear up.

Lol yes, that must be some kind of weird engine conversion xD
Maybe this engine is nostalgic.

It looks like the gates never went down at the crossing. You can see one to the right of the steam engine

Yeah, many might just call it pollution, but I LOVE IT! It’s so intense and dramatic!
