Only Dave can think that TV packaging boxes are interesting enough from a product design perspective to make a video about them.

You missed the coolest thing... If you squeeze the sides of the lattice foam it will collapse down, you can see how it was a smaller piece of foam that’s cut and then pulled apart.

One bicycle manufacturer wondered why their bikes kept getting damaged in shipping, when TVs in similarly sized boxes rarely do. So they started putting a picture of a TV on their bicycle shipping boxes, and the rate of damage fell quite a bit -- because people know that TVs are fragile and handle them more carefully, while they assume that bicycles are more sturdy and less likely to be damaged by rough handling.

I'm so SATISFIED someone else finds this interesting. The first time I unpacked a heavy object where the top box slid over a smaller box at the bottom I was like "this is the future".

Remember when boot time was just how long it took for the tube filaments to warm up?

Pepperidge Farm remembers.

I watched until the end hoping to see a Dave rant about the Android TV setup process wanting accounts and a dozen or so agreements just to watch TV. Maybe that can be a followup video? :)

There is a whole science in packaging, one of those thing one would never think of studying but its really important with globalization amongst other things, air bags spring to mind. Nice to highlight the things that are not normally noticed

Another tip that I got from a friend that works in the shipping business.
When it comes to those straps holding the package together, it has been designed so you can take them off without using a knife or scissors.
You find the seam, where it has been welded, and turn the strap inside out. There will be a short stump that you can grab and yank, and the strap will generally come apart at the seam. Sometimes they can be a bit stubborn, but usually it works.

It takes longer to turn on than unbox!

When you got to the last full size bottomless "overbox" could you have turned it upside down at that point, removed the short bottom box, attached the feet and turned it right way up before removing the last of the packaging with it supporting itself? If so it would make it easier for one person to unpack and not result in the edge balancing act you had.

When we were first ordering LCD monitors for clients, we purchased (Samsung or Sony - I think) and of course the screens were face-up in their box and we just sliced into them with the box-cutter to open them up and ....

2:29 Packaging straps. There is no need to "cut" them. There is technology built into them. Reach under the bottom strap has a section you can grab and then pull away breaking the strap apart! Give it a go next time you come across one.

I like the idea of celebrating the unsung heroes of stuff we never think about. There's probably some packaging designer out there that's going ballistic because it's the first time he's received real recognition from anyone. You can't rock up to a dinner party showing off about how well you designed a box for a TV, but this stuff is important, potentially saving thousands of tons of carbon in reshipping and breakage costs, let alone annoyance factor. You don't get credit for when people DON'T break their tv, only criticism when they DO.
Kudos random stranger!
Maybe Dave could start a series with nominations or something! :)

I just got a 40kg air conditioner which had vaguely similar packaging (specifically, the bottomless box that just lifts off). Dumbo me didn't realize this at first; I was halfway through lifting the aircon vertically out of the box when I realized I had missed a much simpler route... there's always a first time :-)

He probably found this in dumpster too 😳

I worked for a company that makes toilet paper, paper towels, paper plates, and paper cups--stuff you take for granted. But you can find interesting technical problems and their solutions in almost any area if you have an open mind and curiousity. Kudos to Dave for having these qualities in abundance.

Like these kinds of videos, just shows how much thought often goes into something that's thrown away

My first summer job was for a picture tube manufacture, I worked in the area where the “packaging engineer” work he went asked me to place a 21-70° or 25” picture tube in a shipping carton without reading the packaging instructions. Based on the number of mistakes I would make in doing it correctly he would consider making changes to the cardboard shipping boxes.
Your TV box is an excellent example of packaging engineering

All you packaging engineers must be jumping with joy over this recognition.
