Mixing vocals with reverb is an art. Apply too little and its pointless. Apply too much and your vocal is buried in a wash of reflections, leading to a sloppy and unprofessional sounding mix.

A lot of new mixers and amateur mixers who don't yet know what they're doing tend to do a lot of damage with reverb. I should know because, once upon a time, I was one of them.

In this video, I share 10 vocal reverb mistakes that are (probably) holding back your mixes from sounding professional.

More importantly, I share some advice and strategies I've developed over a decade of mixing which should help you better understand how to mix vocals with reverb to achieve a professional sounding mix.

If you're struggling with vocal reverb, or achieving professional results in general, this video should help.

I tend to make fairly dense rock music. More and more, I find delay works better than reverb for what I need. It still creates a sense of space and atmosphere, but it gets out of the way faster than reverb (if you set it right). It also can offer more of a sense of width and motion to a vocal. A stereo delay with each side set to a different timing, or a ping pong delay., can help the vocal move around the stereo field in an interesting way. But you don't have all that wash of the reverb tail that comes with a long reverb or the boxiness that comes with a super short reverb.

Most metal mixers I've talked to only use delay on vocals, so I think it must have something to do with track density and tempo.
