"You can sue for anything but winning is a different story" best takeaway from the video

I once was at a middle school where all the teachers kept giving out big assignments you were meant to work on over a week all at the same time, so every kid was getting like 9 of these for a single week, and apparently the ENTIRE GRADE'S PARENTS all complained to the school because this was an ungodly amount of work expected on kids, esp those with extra curriculars and they had a big meeting with all the students and parents to basically apologize and promise they'd communicate with each other so only one class would assign one of these per week. the fact that they weren't doing that to begin with still boggles my mind.

This sounds like the sort of thing you could only win as a group.

One student claiming a teacher gives an unreasonable amount of homework, that’s a student problem.

Now, get 50 of their students in on it and it’s a teacher problem

When I was in 3rd grade i got mono, my school was supposed to send work home with my little sister. They straight up refused to send me work?? When i git back to school i had over 20 pages of work PER DAY just for math class. My mom tried helping but it was too much work.
Same school where i had a asthma attack and my teacher made me sit outside for being "distracting and attention seeking" It was a Arizona winter and my hands and feet were going numb (still couldn't breathe) before the principal came and took me to her office. They didn't let me have my inhaler, forgot why, but the nurse was across the school from my class.

I remember one of my teachers told the class we need to study their subject for at least 1 hour every day at home. I told her that's not possible as everyone of my teachers say the same, I explained that we had 8 subjects meaning an extra 8 hours studying after school which finished at 3pm meaning studying would take us to 11pm not including travel time, eating, family time or other activities as well as the schools recommended 8 hours sleep. She responded with "you need to learn better time management", so I did, I cut out all studying and homework and dedicated my time to other things

I love how schools have went from a place to learn and are now a place to work and prove your knowledge. It doesn’t feel like learning, it feels like a challenge. It’s more learning how to memorize, finding ways to avoid work, and finding ways to cheat. Towards the end of my high school career, I went from being able to get perfect purely from my brain to feeling like I needed to cheat on tests. I could easily memorize what I needed to “know”, but I’d probably want to experience free-falling by midterms.

“Proving homework caused emotional distress”

I’ll have to tripple check but I could’ve sworn that there are multiple studies at this point proving that yes. It does have a tendency to induce elevated rates of distress. Nevermind how poor grades can indeed cause issues either at home or just with the individual.

The most emotionally distressing moments of my life were as a kid, going into school having not finished an assignment knowing how much shit ide get in and embarrassment. The homework is too much sometimes. Kids should be allowed to be kids outside of school

At my elementary school they didn’t give us homework because they felt it was better for us to spend time with our family and friends 😊

As a Canadian, I have never had more homework than to read a 5 sentence long paragraph on record every two weeks

Homework as a concept makes absolutely no sense. School is designed to mimick a regular 9 to 5 job, and there aren’t many jobs that require you to work off the clock, I mean last I checked that was illegal in all 50 states.

I get that it’s probably supposed to encourage independent learning, but if that’s the case, why not just make the homework extra credit rather than a mandatory task?

Dropped outta school because I had 3 types of different math homework and 2 English classes. Had 2 books to read every every month along with the daily assignments and homework. And then had algebra 1, geometry, and pre calculus homework to take home. Afterschool Id take the city bus to my afterschool job and barely have an hour to myself to eat, shower & do homework before I had to go to sleep and do it all over again. Wish I would’ve tried to sue frfr. Emotional damage and conflicted the result of every thing I do outside of school. I was always so worn out physically and mentally I called my science class hour a Definite fail class; as it was the only hour a teacher would let me sleep. Still gave me homework tho😒
