Why Cant I Find a Job? - (The Solution)

"You are a master of nothing.” 🤔

That was a professor’s statement after glancing at my resume in 2015, a time where I had been desperately seeking a job.

What I hadn’t realized back then was that in trying to present myself on paper as well rounded, I unknowingly made it impossible for recruiters and hiring managers to place me.

At first I resisted making changes to my resume because I distinctly remember feeling nervous to define myself as just one thing on paper (and pigeonhole my career).

Part of this sentiment was ingrained in me through school as I was taught that being well rounded is the desired end state that unlocks jobs.

And another part is simply human nature because we are all multi-faceted and it simply feels unnatural to place a single stake in the ground.

So If you are in the job market, the best advice I can give you is to showcase yourself as a master of something.

Remember that the job search process is just a game and the title you put on your resume isn’t the sum total of who you are.

Hi John,
Thank you for the advice, that was really helpful. I have been struggling with the same thing. And because of the that I thought I might be coming across as confused. Now I know!

Thanks John! I have mentored many students over the past few years and recently graduated myself so I know the feeling.
I noticed a pattern where students brand themselves, fail to land an internship/full-time offer in the field they chose, and generalize themselves in response. Ex. I wanted to be a management consultant (I still want to) and checked all the boxes, yet still fell short and widened my reach. Also, I noticed an interesting pattern with my applications, although I applied to more than 10 firms (which I had all met previously) across the spectrum, the only interest I received was from McKinsey and BCG. Any idea why?

I think recruiters don’t give a fuck about the linked in profile it’s about the recruiter liking the applicant race match personality match

John, that’s great advice! I really understand how important it is to represent oneself as a master of one domain. However, I have one question- For someone who is fresh out of college with no prior industry experience whatsoever, how would you suggest one follow your advice? Since in college one is taught a variety of skills which fit into multiple job roles.
