That is why early Muslims were so persistent to learn about the shape of the earth in the first place and that is why Al Biruni calculated the diameter of the earth so they can direct newly built mosques to precisely directed to Kabah.

The word سطحت doesn't mean flattened in early Arabic, Sath, سطح in Arabic is not a shape, it's a place, the upper outside of every shape, or what is translated to "Surface", so the verse means that God has made a surface to the earth, without that surface the earth would be a gas planet like Jupiter.

The verse is clear, as it speaks about the creature of the night and the creature of the day. What does the earth have to do with the behavior of night and day? You might say that night and day rotate around the earth. But who told you that night and day exist only on the earth? Rather, they are heavenly creations
أَأَنتُمْ أَشَدُّ خَلْقًا أَمِ السَّمَاءُ ۚ بَنَاهَا (27) رَفَعَ سَمْكَهَا فَسَوَّاهَا (28) وَأَغْطَشَ لَيْلَهَا وَأَخْرَجَ ضُحَاهَا (29) وَالْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ دَحَاهَا
"Aghtasha laylaha" means the night of the sky. So, does God's saying "He wraps the night over the day" also imply that the sky is spherical? What is the meaning of "yukawir" in the Quran? If you say it means that something becomes spherical, then here you are confirming that the sun is not currently spherical in shape
إِذَا الشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَتْ (1) وَإِذَا النُّجُومُ انكَدَرَتْ ...
So, from the terrors of the Day of Judgment, the sun will be wrapped. Does that mean the sun will become spherical on that day? If so, what is its shape now?

The early scholars differed on the shape of the earth, especially after the members of the astronomical body affiliated with the authority reached a consensus on the earth being spherical. Some scholars agreed with the consensus of this body, which translated Ptolemy's Greek book on astronomy, stating that the earth is stationary and the center of the universe, but spherical in shape. Some scholars did not oppose the astronomical body on the earth's sphericity. The issue arises when some mix the consensus of the astronomical body affiliated with the ruling authority with the consensus of religious scholars, mistakenly believing that the members of the body are Islamic scholars. In reality, the astronomical body was under the authority of the ruling power, similar to today's official institutions that echo what NASA says.

The scholar who believed the astronomical body would say, "The astronomical body has reached a consensus, " not "the scholars have reached a consensus." This scholar would then justify their claim of a spherical earth by saying that this does not necessarily contradict the verses, as the earth appears flat to the observer. There is no verse that explicitly indicates the earth's sphericity. There are other scholars who disagreed with the astronomical body, saying their reference is the Book of God. Among these dissenters was the author of the book "Tafsir al-Khazin, " who said :

وَهُوَ الَّذِي مَدَّ الْأَرْضَ
"...and He is the one who spread out the earth, meaning He stretched it over the surface of the water..." until he said, "According to the astronomers, the earth is a sphere, and it can be said that if the sphere is vast and immense, each part of it would appear as if it is stretched out like a large, vast surface. This was the reconciliation made by the astronomers.

However, God has informed us that He spread out the earth, shaped it, and stretched it, and all of this indicates the flattening of the earth. And God, the Exalted, is more truthful in speech and clearer in evidence than the astronomers."

So, the shape of the earth became a matter of disagreement among scholars, not because the verses were unclear, but due to the influence of the astronomical body members who followed what was found in the translated works of the Greek mathematician and astronomer Ptolemy. As for the stability of the earth and its position as the center of the universe, this was a point of consensus among the scholars, as well as among the members of the astronomical body. There was no disagreement between them on the earth’s stability and centrality.
