The same Nickelodeon that had Ren and Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life and a grown man with severe OCD host two of the most messy game shows in television history!?

I still today rewatch it at times. Nickelodeon only canceled it because Invader Zim did not appeal to the target demographic of 2-11 years old. And a few kids came out crying after test watching Dark Harvest, to add more detail.

1. I love anything by Jhonen Vasquez, but especially invader zim.

Actually, it was cancelled primarily due to lack of viewers. While yes there where concerns over its content, this factor according to the show writer himself likely played little to no part in the cancellation decision. While the show is popular now, back then it had a very small following, primarily due to its time placement (often just before school let out, and virtually never on weekends). The reruns found on nicktoons on the other hand where discontinued due to concerns over the mature content. Now i do believe it still runs occasionally around halloween, and sometimes in the winter, but the most controversial episodes have since been removed.

Edit: for its initial cancellation high costs were also noted, as this team was one of the first to use 2D stylized 3D for certain animations, (for examples of this style, see futurama, Invader zims big water balloon episode and butt on venus episode, and a great music video called freak of the week by freak kitchen).

I don’t know why Nickelodeon thought Jhonen was the right guy for a kids show in the first place. Don’t get me wrong, great guy, amazing content, but he started out with a book about a man killing people. Violently. And hired him from a spinoff of said book about the neglected neighbor child. 🤨

Invader Zim has the type of humor that not only shocks you with creativity but good timing.
Definitely adult innuendos but children wouldn’t understand it until about 12yrs or less

The real reason it was canceled along with other good shows is because SpongeBob came out right around that time and became super popular. Because it was so popular Nickelodeon wanted to give SpongeBob as much air time as possible so they used any reason to cancel shows. Invader zim: too dark, my life as a teenage robot: not popular enough, Danny phantom: scheduling issues, get the picture? All minor issues that Nickelodeon used to cancel fan favorite shows just to give their golden boy SpongeBob more air time so they make more money.
