I worked at a Dish Network uplink when this show came out and the line "Its not stupid, its advanced" was the tag line for the whole setup.

I watched Invader Zim when I was like 7 and I absolutely do not remember this show being this insane. But I do remember being completely obsessed with it.

Man this show had so much to it that you couldn’t help but get addicted.
It was outrageous and nutty but has a million one liners.

Invader Zim was ahead of its time. It feel like this was the Misadventure of Flapjack of Nickelodeon.

One thing that made me love Invader Zim is the fact that despite the goofy off the wall insanity and sheer stupidity of all of its universes inhabitants, it's clear the writers put a lot of thought into the actual backstory and setting that every so often they let leak through in small scenes like Zim recalling how he was "born".

In aggregate, it all paints a clear picture of the Irkens as a post-singularity species. Whatever they were before they became what they are as we know them, they've been heavily modified to effectively be mass produced cybernetic biodrones for the express purpose of being tools of artificial intelligences.

As a kid who was really into speculative sci-fi and hard sci-fi, that sort of stuff was my jam and let's me continue to enjoy the series on other levels to this day.

The creator of Invader Zim, Jhonen Vazquez, original script, was much darker, but Nikelodeon told him to make it nicer. This is also how Nightmare Before Christmas was with Tim Burton, yes Nightmare Before Christmas was orihinally much darker.

Invader Zim, man. Talk about a pop culture phenomena and icon. Holy shit! And for GREAT reason too. It’s the perfect time capsule of early-2000’s animated shows. It was DARK as hell, morbidly hilarious, and so original. It absolutely still holds up today. It’s just as good now as an adult as it was when I was a kid.

There’s never been anything like it before or since it aired. While there obviously were MANY great animated shows at that time, they pale in comparison to Invader Zim. It out shown everything. It’s a true testament to how even animated shoes CAN/SHOULD be smartly written and to trust that the kids watching it don’t need their hands held watching it, or every thing explained to them as if the character’s on screen are talking directly to the audience through the TV, rather than actually having a cohesive show full of cohesive episodes.

Invader Zim is one of the all time greatest animated shows ever aired/created. It was almost immediately an instant classic for the 11-14 year old demographic. I loved(still do obviously) Invader Zim so much that when I found out the creator had actually wrote a comic called Johnny the Homicidal Maniac before ever creating Invader Zim; that had a 7 issue run I had to try and snag some. It’s similar in style to Invader Zim, but cranked to 12. Same type of humor but just VASTLY darker. If you have read it do yourself a favor and read it. It’s a one of kind comic run that if you’re into comics, you absolutely MUST read it.

I was already in my very early 20s when this came out, but being an avid fan of all warped comics and animation, from Ren and Stimpy, very early South Park to Fritz the Cat etc (we didn't have as many options back then), I was instantly hooked on this incredible piece of art....it was hilarious but also darkly witty and a perfect reflection of the society to come.

After rewatching episodes of this show I think this show would totally work nowadays. You could make it darker and still appeal to different age groups because the satirical content the original had was ahead of it's time

The rubber piggy was truly traumatizing to vicariously live through from dib's perspective

Oh, you didn't include the episode that scared me for life, "Bestest Friends." That's the one where a boy wants to be Zim's BFF, so Zim removes his eyeballs and makes him think every squirrel is actually Zim. Freaked me out as a kid. XD great analysis, regardless.

Invader Zim was peak American cartoon for adults/ teens or children. It was definitely ahead of its time, cult favorite. It's comedy is definitely my style and I still love love and Cherish this cartoon. It beats all American cartoons by a mile based on story and comedy and entertainment.
