"I never made a first impression ever again." There's something incredibly profound and poignant about that.

That line - "nobody wants you to be real, they just want a photo" hit me so hard. Everyone talks about how fake celebrities can be but deep down that's what most people seem to actually want. They don't want a real human person, they just want a larger than life artifice. Something they can take a selfie with and post on instagram to boost their own self esteem. As bleak as that must be for the celebrity, it says something even bleaker about the influence of celebrity on society as a whole.

This reminds me of when Dave Chapelle came to Toronto 15 years ago and my friend and I wanted a photo with him. He looked at us and said "What's up I'm Dave, how are you guys doing?" This began a 30-40 minute conversation about life and all kinds of stuff. At the end I didn't even want a photo cause it felt weird so we just shook hands and said see ya Dave. It made me realize he was just a funny guy who did comedy for a living and happen to be famous.

That's what I love about these videos. Unlike talk show interviews, the actors aren't trying to play to the camera, or trying to sell anything. They are talking about real experiences and thoughts, and more importantly trying to be themselves instead of a portrayal of themselves.

Ethan Hawke is more real than anyone I have ever seen. I really respect him.

It really hurts to hear him say he felt that way when he spoke to the students. I understand how he could feel that way though. Society tends to put people on pedestals and it really does isolate them and steal away their humanity. It's unfortunate.

For someone to be famous at such a young age he's stayed so real

I would have LOVED to talk to Ethan Hawke about his craft and talk about films and art. I can't believe film students didn't take that seriously.

Never knew Ethan Hawke was such a philosopher. Great conversationalist. Would love an hour with him to pick his brain.

Sam Jones is quite possibly the best interviewer ever. An active listener, empathetic, and keeps it light and real which is very difficult. You can tell how at ease all these celebrities are. Late night talk shows need more of his personality.

I don't actually think I've seen a lot of his movies, but after these interviews, I'd have loved to sit down and actually talk to him. Seems like a clever guy who has more to offer than his fame.

I'm shocked. I've never thought that a well-known person could feel so lonely and miserable. I'm feel sorry for Ethan. He might think of the possibility to come to my country (Ukraine), not many people will recognize him)

His last sentence, "We're just the same. All of us" is what is key because it is so profoundly true. Hawke is one of the few actors today who is real.

Whether you're Famous or unknown, we're all destined to go through this life without anyone ever know who we really are on the inside.

The nature of my moms job, she met a lot of famous people, on a custodial level... and she worked with Ethan Hawke for about a week. He wrote her a long thank you note at the end, thanking her for her hard work. He’s a cool guy.

I used to bump into so many Hollywood types when we lived in LA. I always kept it real. Never, ever spoke to them about their careers. Had some amazing long chats with Ewan McGregor, Alanis Morissette and Shirley Manson, among others. Treat them like regular folk, they love it!!

So well put. That said, every single person making a comment here is also trying to be heard. Famous, not famous, we all just want to connect

"What No One Told Ethan Hawke About Being Famous" - Reading this title, I was pretty confident the "thing noone told him" would be something I have heard several times already in other interviews with other people. I was not ready for the depth of the idea of "never making first impression ever again". I am not overstating one bit when I say there isn't a single interviewer in the world (that I know of) that would come even close to this depth in these interviews. It's a whole other level. People compliment the guys that does the interviews with Hot Chicken Wings for being well prepared and having great question, but I have never heard an actual personal thought in any of those interviews. And now I'm here at Ethan Hawke, I just finished watching Bo Burnham, and I'm like ... THIS is what the word "interview" mean. I want to hear the ideas and thoughts of these people that I find interesting, and I have never heard them anywhere else like I've heard them on this channel.
