What if I told you there were scientifically proven communication patterns that, if left unchecked, will end a relationship.

I'm Travis Goodman, a licensed therapist and I make videos on holistic mental health; my heart is to equip you with the tools and skills necessary to help you live a peaceful, balanced, and fulfilled life.

In this video, I share about The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are negative communication patterns that Dr. John Gottman identified in his research as being predictive of relationship breakdown. They are:

Criticism: This involves attacking a partner's character or personality, rather than addressing a specific behavior or issue. For example, saying "You're so lazy" instead of "I feel frustrated that you didn't clean up."

Contempt: This involves treating a partner with disrespect and disdain. Examples include eye-rolling, name-calling, or sarcasm.

Defensiveness: This involves seeing oneself as the victim and denying responsibility for problems in the relationship. For example, saying "It's not my fault" or "You always blame me."

Stonewalling: This involves withdrawing from the conversation and shutting down emotionally. It can manifest as silence, physical distance, or a lack of engagement.

According to Gottman's research, these communication patterns can be incredibly damaging to a relationship and can increase the likelihood of divorce or separation. The key to avoiding these patterns is to focus on constructive communication and express emotions in a healthy and productive way.
