I've been telling doctors that I have chronic fatigue, nausea, tingling and numbness, cold intolerance, etc. for many years. I was tired of feeling like crap and they thought it was all in my head. My finger nails have vertical lines and no half-moons and my toe nails have very deep horizontal lines. These past couple of months, I lost my hearing in both ears and have gotten random severe dizzy spells. I finally found another doctor who ordered many labs and a blood smear and found out that I have low hemoglobin, low ferritin, and diagnosed with microcytic hypochromic anemia with anisocytosis. I am now on an iron therapy and seeing a hematologist to see what is causing it. It's so bad that I can't even stand in line at a grocery store without wanting to faint.

You’ve posted a short about this 3x, but Id like to know what it means when you have lunulae only on the thumbs.

This nail is also seen with chronic heart conditions and renal conditions. Both can produce this. Severe COPD also because of poor oxygen uptake. The lunulae disappear because the body starts shunting blood to the vital organs and diverts blood from the periphery. Capillaries get constricted to an extent and diverts oxygen. Any disorder of poor oxygenation produces this. I'm a retired critical care nurse and nursing/ medical doctor instructor.

People with Hashimotos Hypo thyroid have trouble with getting adequate iron levels in the blood. . Thanks for talking about tell tale signs of anemia.

No lunulae means absolutely nothing. In some people it shows and in others it does not. The biggest indicator of health problems is the nails condition. Brittle, peeling, scaling, etc all indicate a potential health problem.

I’m pretty sure you just helped me catch what’s been making me dizzy as hell. I don’t have them.

If you only have half moons on your thumbnails it could mean that those on your fingernails are hidden under the cuticle. But don't go looking for them, don't damage your cuticle.

Sometimes, if you can’t see the lunulae in the fingers, it can be because the cuticles are hiding them. If you gently push the cuticles down, you can see them. The lunulae in the thumbs usually show pretty easily.

This reminds me why it’s kinda dangerous to do cosmetic procedures. For example, lip blushing I would never do because I NEED to see my lip color. If my lips are too pale that’s a indicator of dehydration. How TF would I see that with lip tattoos

Severely anemic is the phrase that was used to describe my condition. I have been w/o half moons on my nails for years. I can recall having them in my early twenties. I take iron to deal with my anemia so I have small half moons on both thumbs. I can tell when my blood level is on the low end - lightheaded, a little on the cold side but wanting ice cold beverages. It is a roller coaster.

Thank you for reminding me. I keep forgetting to schedule my next series of infusions. It's a pain to drive an hour to get them but it really makes a difference

I'm pretty sure they suggest taking B12 to help with anemia. I don't know how many people I've talked to looking for the B12 supplements where I work that have never bothered to read the directions for taking B12! It directly instructs you to put the B12 under your tongue and let it slowly dissolve. B12 cannot be absorbed in the Gastrointestinal tract and must be absorbed directly in the bloodstream SUBLINGUAL (under the tongue like nitroglycerin for heart conditions)! Most people just swallow the tablet whole and consequently they never get the benefit of B12 in their system!

Oh dang, you just taught me something! See, I also have anemia, but I’ve always had lunulae. I just checked and realized I now only have the barest of curves and only on my thumbs … so weird.

Do more ..problems...
I am going thru perimenopause 61 late probably due too zero thyroid now plus after years they realized I needed T3 liothyonine too not just T4 levothyroinine. No cancer from the uterus the providers freaked out you are to old etc.. Now decreased nail growth lines in nails ring fingers most notable then all nail the stringy quick skin around nail is peeling back all the time never before until now. My nails looked chewed up. I do have osteophytes in many places. Spine now shoulders and hip Joints too. Years ago I worked with a Washington University neurologist for a couple of years...he did a super complete physical assessment which also indeed included looking at nails for toxins... With a twinkle in his eyes with the med student PA students and nursing students he stated "in France they prefer to do a neurological assessment in the nude". Thanks

I needed to hear that because I’ve always been anemic, thanks😊

Going by the comment section, everyone is anemic! But truthfully, I have diagnosed anemia and have only thumb moons. I’d conclude that anemia is more common than ppl think. It can cause blood sugar issues and according to med journals, nearly half of Americans are in some stage of diabetes 😮 (linked?)
