Ancient Christian Beliefs About Sex Were WILD

Ancient Christians had WILD beliefs about sexuality and gender. Here’s 5 of them.

Was Adam androgynous? What did the apostle Paul say about sex? What does Christianity say about gender roles? Was sex allowed in early Christianity? Here I discuss all of these issues, citing the writings of Paul, the Gospel of Thomas, the Gospel of Philip, Polemon the Stoic, Acts of Thecla, and more.

Thank you to Dr. Bart Ehrman, Dr. Jennifer Knust, and Dr. Jeffrey Siker for speaking with me on this.

Paul really said “You can be gay, just don’t be a bottom, dude.”😂😂

I can’t help but think part of the chastity beliefs came from the fact they literally thought the kingdom of god was soon at hand. Why bother having babies when the apocalypse is right around the corner?

19:08

When I was growing up catholic I was so ashamed of anything related to sex, that I actually prayed gor god to take my sexual organs away so that I would never be tempted to sin again. I remember reading that verse and wanting to castrate myself, but not not being "brave enough" to do it (which made me feel more guilty). I lived in constant fear of going to hell, and I hated myself. Now that I don't believe I can still see the consequences of growing up like this

Thomas really said “trans your gender, or else” 😂

So women are imperfect men... So does that mean men are supposed to be attracted to "imperfect men" and not "perfect" men? 😂

They talk about sex as something so wrong that even the mother of Jesus had to be a virgin 💀

Damn dude, as an ex-mormon, I love your videos. In Mormon culture there are a lot of things that are different than typical Christian sects, but the things you break down and dissect apply so well to Mormon doctrine and teachings. It really helps me deconstruct what I was raised as. Thanks for the hard work man

Sex didn't ruin humanity. Men with fragile egos did.

3:20 I love that they were basically going “Hey man gay sex is fine but if you’re not domming it’s a sin”

“Paul” seems painfully sex repulsed. Was he ace, or just a misogynistic virgin?
Because I totally get the negative perception of sex, I myself find it gross from hearing about it, yet I wouldn’t call it immoral

Jesus was like “Transition transmen, and be based!”

So Paul was the original: You're only gay if you take it?

“Bad theology leads to orgies.” God, I WISH. Can you imagine how much chiller today’s Christians would be if that were true?

Interestingly the word 'celibate' just means 'not married' in French and Latin. There is no connotation about sexual abstinence.

There's a correction tho.

Celibacy was not always demanded for priesthood. it was introduced during the First Lateran Council in the XII century.

Grew up a christian and followed the faith deeply, it was when I delved DEEP into the faith and the word and different translations/versions. I saw so much that I couldn't articulate and no one could answer my questions when I asked, a Rabbi, a preist, a pastor, a monk, or a even a Hend/Mullah. You have helped my brain articulate and answer my questions along with a few of your other fellow YouTubers that explain these kinds of subjects. Thank you for everything you do, and all the work you do on these videos. You have helped me so much and I feel like I'm no longer mentally suffering with all the questions. I have my answers. Thanks to you.

Some of these behaviors aren't completely forgotten, I went to church in the last two decades with a man who had cut of his hand to prevent himself from sinning. Hopefully rare, but these verses still inspire people to do horrible things to themselves.
