When I was growing up catholic I was so ashamed of anything related to sex, that I actually prayed gor god to take my sexual organs away so that I would never be tempted to sin again. I remember reading that verse and wanting to castrate myself, but not not being "brave enough" to do it (which made me feel more guilty). I lived in constant fear of going to hell, and I hated myself. Now that I don't believe I can still see the consequences of growing up like this

Interestingly the word 'celibate' just means 'not married' in French and Latin. There is no connotation about sexual abstinence.

Celibacy was not always demanded for priesthood. it was introduced during the First Lateran Council in the XII century.

Grew up a christian and followed the faith deeply, it was when I delved DEEP into the faith and the word and different translations/versions. I saw so much that I couldn't articulate and no one could answer my questions when I asked, a Rabbi, a preist, a pastor, a monk, or a even a Hend/Mullah. Some of these behaviors aren't completely forgotten, I went to church in the last two decades with a man who had cut of his hand to prevent himself from sinning. Hopefully rare, but these verses still inspire people to do horrible things to themselves.
