Restored! How God can Give Back What You've Lost | Sermon Series Description
“I will restore the years that the locust has eaten.” That’s a promise written in the book of Joel. In this series, we’ll learn that God can restore lost years. We will hear the truths on how God does this—by deepening our communion with Christ, by multiplying our fruitfulness, and recognizing that God can restore lost years by bringing a long-term gain from a short-term loss.

Open the Bible is the teaching ministry of Pastor Colin Smith. Our mission is to use a broad array of modern media to help people around the world meet Jesus. We do this by opening the Bible for them, helping them open the Bible themselves, and equipping them to open the Bible with others.

This appeared on my YouTube feed after listening to C.H. Spurgeon's 1886 "The Years the Locusts Have Eaten". Most of my years were "locust eaten" due to ignorance, folly, deception and willful sin. Knowing that years wasted for any reason will not come back is a stinging reality, but that God in his mercy will redeem the time if we repent. Pastor John MacArthur said several years ago that "Hard preaching produces soft hearts". The most growth in my life has been in the last 5 years after some very hard preaching and repentance. How freeing to not fear man or death, but to truly know that the Lord who thought of me before the foundation of the earth is active and living in me. He will redeem the time for His glory.

I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. Today is March 1. It is Ash Wednesday. Today, Joel 2:1-2, 12-17 will most likely be read in churches today. Jesus' journey to the Cross begins today. Monday a week ago (February 20), my mother completed her journey to the Cross. Worshipers today will have crossed marked on their foreheads. The minister will say, "Remember that you are but dust, and to dust you shall return one day." Thursday (February 23), she was returned to the earth from where she came. It will all happen to us one day. There's no avoiding it.

Lamenting is not self pity. It is deep grief over the calamities brought about by sin, and the hatred of the devil for God's kingdom. May He teach us to truly lament.

What about the eschatilogical aspects of Joel? I think the example of Lot fails to support your assertion that Christians are responsible as to whether God will repent of a judgement He plans to bring upon any particular group-nation state.
