It doesn’t make sense that it’s just a matter of gossip. The fact that Ham is SPECIFICALLY identified as the father of Canaan, and Canaan—not Ham—bears the curse means something else. The fact that the Hifil form of the verb translated “told” is used implies that something happened between Ham and Noah, or Noah’s wife. There’s some kind of bragging going on on Ham’s part. This isn’t merely, “Hey, bros, Pops is passed out in his tent.” There’s a strong implication that something serious transpired, and the naming of Canaan indicated this fact.

This is a good explanation. Also, the motif of dishonoring one's father explains why Noah cursed Ham's *son.* Noah's son had become a curse (due to Ham), so Noah ensured that Ham's son would likewise become a curse.
