This video explains the difference between simple & compound time signatures ;there is also a helpful section on identifying and labelling time signature as duple, triple or quadruple.
This video is roughly equivalent to grade 3 of the associated board (ABRSM) music theory exams.

I've been taking music classes for 10 years and no one has explained this concept to me. Fast forward to present time I'm taking a music theory class in college and I'm struggling to understand this. This video series has been a great help. Thank you.

I've had a number of music teachers who took a lot longer to explain these relatively simple concepts. This is good teaching.

A hint to remember:

The # on top for SIMPLE:
2 3 4 (goes in numerical order)

The # on top for COMPOUND
3 x 2 3 & 4(the numbers for simple), meaning:
3x2 = 6
3x3 = 9
3x4 = 12
Therefore, the top # for compound will be 6 9 12

Idk if that helps in any way for you but it helped me so..

Funny I always thought that the names were only eight notes, half notes, whole notes, quarter, etc. But I just discovered today that there were breves, crotchets, quavers.... And now I'm memorizing this new concept :0

And ps, I'm pretty sure most of the musical community already knew this from early on but I've only been learning for 10 months and is currently preparing for leve 8 :( so it's definitely new to me. (Currently doing kevel5 theory tho, my theory is lacking and they required complete at least one leasc 5 test before doing levell 8)
