Some schools of matayoshi will practice a more backward movement however you will find that with an aggressive opponent during the bunkai too much of a backward movement is more of a hindrance than a help so the focus is on returning to counter immediately

when was this taken and how long ago? I forgot parts of my kata and recognized the "Samurai" in the background. That is the same Samurai I looked at for 13 years of my time training at Tri-star karate

Beautiful that a special bo? it makes a snap sound on every stoke sounds like you are hitting

Kiai is a Japanese thing which was used in all of Japanese martial arts like Kendo etc.  Funaskoshi introduced it to his Karate to be more acceptable to the Japanese.  It was not used in Okinawa until introduction by Funaskoshi.

it should just be a short blast of air making a suddon shout using your abdomen not a from your throught that last forever that just hurts your throught
