The Minecraft Survival Guide Season 3 continues in Minecraft 1.21 - the Tricky Trials Update!

In today's video we find our first Trial Chamber thanks to a map from a Cartographer villager. You might stumble into these structures online, but a Journeyman Cartographer can sell you a map straight to it!

Once we're in the Trial Chamber, we go through room by room smashing Decorated Pots for loot, taking on the challenge of Trial Spawners, acquiring Trial Keys and opening Vaults. We collect precious items, a new banner pattern, new armour trim, and a new music disc!
We have our first encounter with the Breeze, a new mob which attacks using the element of wind. Wind charges knock back the player with powerful force, but once defeated, the Breeze Rods it drops can be broken down into wind charges for players to use!
At the end of the experience, I compare the loot we got from pots and chests, mob drops, and Vaults - but we're saving our first attempt at Ominous Trials and Ominous Vaults for the next episode.

Along the way I discover a new approach to slime farming, watch a lot of skeletons fight each other, and discover some Vault locations I didn't even know were a thing!

It is intentional that while holding an axe and a shield the latter takes priority to avoid accidental scraping wood or copper instead of blocking. Sneaking reverses it.

the only thing i don't like about the Chambers is its quite unclear how many rooms there are. I dug through a wall once and discovered a whole new area that i would've missed.

I was exploring a trial chamber last night and I opened a door to see a regular zombie spawner sitting directly in front of the door about 5 blocks away, cobblestone room and everything. It was so perfectly intersected with the chamber I couldn't believe it.

Trial chambers are really goddamn cool, they add a much needed action RPG element to the game and they have some of the most complex procedural generation the game has ever seen.

Pix said that you might not be able to de-wax the bulbs with a shield in offhand, however you can, just gotta shift/crouch! (15:23) Figured this information would be helpful to those who like to use shields. So happy to see survival guide back in full swing as well!

The best loot you can get from the Trial Chamber... is all those juicy coppers block

I got the music box version of "Creator" by Lena Raine from a decorated pot, so you don't need to do an ominous vault for that one.

4:09 that is very cool I’m really happy that they’re using new ways of including loot into structures

Please do be careful Pix, I used the new bottle in a trial chamber in my world (Bedrock Version), and two of the spawners had moss cobblestone, it spawned many, and I mean many baby zombies with diamond armor and swords. I was in full enchanted netherite armor too. and they took me out fast, stole my gear, finally I geared back up and took out the zombie in my gear and it disappeared, with the zombie, probably a glitch but heart breaking nevertheless. I hope being Java player this doesn't happen to you.
Love and hopeful success in your journeys Pix!!

Fun bit of secret about the Vault Block, it is possible to be able open the same Vault Block more than once. This is because the Vault Block has limit on the number of players it remembers and is on what is called a player list. The limit is 128 players on Java Edition, and I believe 20 on Bedrock Edition (?? on that one at the moment). What that means is that if you are the 1st player that opened it and got its loot, and the 129th player opened it... the Vault Block pushes the players up one spot and forgets the 1st player. If the 1st player goes near that Vault Block that Players 2 to 129 opened, that Vault Block will be available to open once again for the 1st player thus repeating the cycle. This memory limit is for each Vault Block.

Not gonna lie, the Vault Block is actually REALLY good for servers with large player counts more than single player worlds. Not only is it a way for the players on the server to go out and tackle a challenge, it is also good for those that already opened the Vault Blocks to pretty much sell Trial Keys to players that aren't really up for a challenge but still want good loot. Or you can sell Trial Keys in Prize Boxes for winning mini-games. For me who plays casually on mostly Peaceful, Trial Chambers isn't that amazing so far. But hey, I am happy that you can get Trial Keys from smashing pots.

This might be the coolest structure mojang has ever added. the spawners and vaults are super cool, excited to see what they do with them in the future

Accidentally encountered one of these and had no idea what to do! Thanks for the level of detail in walking the viewer through the process of tackling a trial chamber! :)

Just want to say even though most of the barrels and chests don’t have much or nothing, some of them have good things. Especially the ones hidden down stairs. The best loot I found from those random chests was a full-health trident.

Also, I went in thinking it would be a little challenging but nothing like my struggles with bastions, so I used an ominous bottle. There were 2 baby zombie spawners close enough to ignite. They had fire aspect swords and diamond armor… I was not prepared and bust a totem. After I got my bearings, it was a nice little game for the casual player that I am. I did four more. Finally got my heavy core. Then got another right after. Very random.

I think it’s the perfect balance for me.

To make things easier for you when your entering the trial chambers, you might want to bring a couple of pet wolves donning Wolf Armour with you, it’s so much fun with the wolves.

Oh thank you for showing the way. Honestly I've been feeling overwhelmed by how much has changed and I really appreciate you giving me an inside view of these trial chambers and tips how to tackle them. I feel much more ready now to take one on.

I got a skeleton and spider and cave spider trial spawners in my first one, and it was a pretty small trial chamber but that made it easy to go through. I got very unlucky in the loot, barely getting any keys, but I did get an ominous bottle and decided to do that to see the difference, and is definitely more challenging for those in late game gear. Chambers by themselves are good for players in probably enchanted iron or diamond or some mix of that since it’s supposed to be a mid game challenge. Doing the regular trials in fully enchanted netherite might be more challenging if you get a lot of bogged or cave spiders, or even baby zombies, but otherwise it was a breeze. But ominous trials is definitely late game gear. More challenging and felt like there was a bit more risk to it. So far I’m having fun! I love the breeze so much it’s so fun to fight! Can’t wait to find more in my world! I can’t wait until I get the heavy core and can mess around with the new weapon it looks like so much fun!

I find it funny you do the torches on the left to find the right way back, in my mind, I'm always choosing the right path, and follow what I left behind. lol

I've had fun with the chambers so far. They're really well made and the breeze is a great addition to the mob roster. I haven't been near death at any point but the rooms where breezes and skeletons run amok definitely kept me busy in the ominous version.

Apart from the spawner mobs, trial chambers otherwise provide the same conditions as ancient cities – absolutely nothing spawns in them naturally. Unlike for ancient cities, the trial chamber spawn override only applies to the individual pieces, not the entire bounding box, so keep that in mind when you gut one for making a base in it or something.

I’ve noticed in many of the rooms with beds, there’s a secrets room behind the bed (marked by a grate as the other secret areas like you mentioned). No loot in them, but a curious little room
