16 was a reasonable amount. 24 is too many and it gives some teams an advantage if their group is one of the last to finish knowing that a win will get them through in 3rd place. The same thing will happen at the next World Cup with 48 teams. 16 for the Euros and 32 for the World Cup were ideal amounts. Top 2 from each group qualifies, plain and simple.

Why does everyone in the media keep saying Ukraine are the first team not to qualify from the group stage of the Euros with 4 points when that is clearly not true? Russia and Croatia at Euro 2012 got 4 points and didn't qualify. At Euro 2004 Spain got 4 points and Italy got 5 points and didn't qualify. Unless they mean the first time under the 24 team format?

Simon is correct, look at England, they slept walked through the group stages and still won the group, no jeopardy. FIFA wanted to make sure all the top teams made it to the knockout stages.

A fairer way with 24 teams might be instead of having 6 groups of 4 teams would be to have 4 groups of 6 teams. Either scrap the round of 16 and have the top two from each group advance to the quarter-finals. Or if the round of 16 stays, the top four from each group qualify.

I think the 3rd place thing has made for boring group games. can play sub par and for draws and still be ok to qualify

Simons underwear habit is rather odd. It adds to waste pollution and seems like a slightly unhinged indulgence of a very rich man. At least he should have them washed and donated to a clothes bank. There are many people who have to wear their pants for days on end because they cant afford multiple pairs. Simon could be a pioneer pants philanthropist!

Still some notable teams didn't qualify for the tournament. Norway, Sweden etc. it will eventually be 32 teams in the future and it will get rid of the 3rd place teams scenario but may end up nullifying some final group games as dead rubbers.

The point is that it's a lot of group games to eliminate only a few teams.

This Format has been used in a couple of World Cup's, so it's not like people are not totally aware of the flaws of this system.

Having 3rd places make it through ruins how it should be. I remember when you knew who you would get before the tourney started. They for some reason have changed that layout in the last few tourneys.

You could always workout possible opponents beforehand. And you wouldn't meet a group member until the final.

Maybe you could have 6 groups of 5 teams, then a team has to finish at least in the middle of a group to go through. However, then the tournament would be longer with more games, and the teams that go far in the competition will be exhausted by the time they reach the final. So, a reduction back to 16 teams makes more sense, but that is unlikely to happen since the WC has now been expanded to 48 teams.
