Bought the Bose Companion 2's eight years ago. They still work flawlessly and still sound great. I've used them on my last 4 PC's. Best $75 I've ever spent.

the "cone" on the back is a Passive radiator, it does the same as a bass reflex port but with it you can tune the bass to go lower without having to increase the box size. (in bassreflex the tube becomes to long if you want to tune it low)

I've had a Z5500 system in my flat for a long time now. Last year the front satelites started to crack up the sound even in low volumes... But I guess they had held their own. I looked up the wattage and ohms that the Z5500 sub based amp pushes out and got some Tannoy wood cabinets used. (70W 6ohm. Perfect) Man it just made my day and I've gotten so much out of my "just a PC-set" system and speakers it should be illegal at this point, with all the "made to break" products that are out and about. So salute to Jay and hope I see you rock some wood cabinets in the near future. hehe. Also, Z5500 comes with remote.

It's great that you are doing this speaker review. I'm sure that there's a lot of people that rather than using head phones use speakers on their PC's. I'm still using a X-530 5.1 Surround Sound Speaker System for my PC audio. It's old, but it sounds perfect for my audio needs. Jay, please do more reviews of PC speakers systems, or speakers in general.

Keep up the good work Jay and may self employment treat you well.

The thing on the back is actually called a passive radiator. It basically acts as a port would, ultimately helping the low end out a bit. The benefit of a passive radiator vs a straight up port is no port turbulence or distortion and it takes up no additional area in the enclosure itself, maximizing the volume.
Sorry had to nerd out for a sec...

Just Wanted to Let People Know, Went out on a Whim and bought these speakers from NCIX for a total of $156 Canadian shipped to the US. I'll be honest with a little EQ in iTunes these speakers seriously have some great definition. I gave them a test run today and with the right EQ <not crazy mind you> A subwoofer would add some low end, but for 3 inch woofers and a passive radiator they can reproduce almost anything I threw at them for the size. Pairing was easy on the Mac and I can tell you for bi-amplified speakers, BOSE wouldn't even come close. - without a subwoofer. Also about not being loud enough, I never had to turn them above half to fill an entire room with sound.

That passive diaphragm design is interesting, though it would probably have to be a sealed speaker set to be more of a studio monitor speaker. Passive diaphragm speaker designs are just like bass ports (bass reflex) enclosures, but the air has to shift the diaphragm instead of being free to leave the enclosure. This gives a tighter, less loose and less boomy tone, but getting rid of this altogether (sealed) still tends to be best for monitoring, though they usually do not go as low or be as efficient. If this enclosure is fully air tight, I would fill it with argon or something to lower the resonance of the speaker, as an experiment.

They are intended to be like monitors in that they produce a much more accurate sound than what you are used to. All speakers add "color" to the sound they reproduce. Very good, often very expensive speaker systems add very little color and reproduce very accurate sound. What you call flat I call reference. Yes from there you could EQ to your preference and yes a small subwoofer would make a huge difference. For best result I would suggest something on a similar level of accuracy/quality. Generally just turning the volume up shouldn't be a problem, they are designed to handle it.

BTW: It is a passive radiator it is similar to a ported enclosure in frequency response with a lower Q. They will probably perform best if placed a few inches from a wall.

I think they look like very nice PC or bookshelf speakers.

Jay, I couldn't help but notice that you have a couple of unused graphics cards on the shelf in the top left corner of the screen. Now, I'm not implying anything but...you're a good man and I'm a good man, which means we're among few good men

I just got these, i am at 50% volume on the speakers and 40% in Windows and it is plenty loud. I think I will get a separate sub though, it is a bit lacking compared to my old 2.1 system, but the audio quality is better.

The main purpose of a speaker is to make sound. The better the sound, the better the speaker. Or at least this is the way it used to be. These days sound quality seems to take a back seat to bells and whistles. So many speaker reviews I have seen lately gush on and on about this fancy electronic feature/gizmo or that, and quality of sound is an afterthought, if it is mentioned at all.  I'm glad sound quality is important to you, in my book that makes you worth listening to.

By the way, the "dampening cone" is a passive radiator. Its purpose is to vibrate due to the air in the box that is moved by the active speakers, and thereby produce more sound/volume. This is fine in theory, but unless designed with great care, it can actually detract from the quality of sound the speakers emit. This may be the cause of the lack of crispness from the speakers despite their dome tweeters. However, these are often perceived as being high tech, so a lot of techies who listen with their eyes will probably think this is a pretty cool feature. As for the manufacturer, it is a really cheap way to increase perceived value.

These things are _way_ too expensive. In this price range, sound quality should be nothing short of stellar. Period.

If sound quality is important to someone, I would advise them to keep looking. There are plenty of speakers out there that sound much better for far less money. Unless, of course, their primary concerns are nifty looks and bells and whistles.

I have them for my Laptop and i love the sound. It lack a little bit of bass for me, but with a subwoofer it should be fine for most people.

I love entry level studio gear. My cheap active monitors with subwoofer  is best sounding system i ever had. 350 Euro is not cheap for PC Speaker, but for studio monitors it is. Also it is not very small, so you have to sacrifice space for good sound. IMHO a subwoofer for small PC-Speakers is a must, otherwise your are better off with some Studioheadphones.

Jay, you really should test the harman/kardon soundsticks, they've got also a wireless connection and are really amazing speakers. It's the best sounding set I've ever bought

Seems to me like its perfect for a simple audio setup for like a Living room or study area or something. Just connect it to a laptop or something, play some music and relax. I don't know why I would want to use my PC speakers to play music from my phone though unless you bought your music straight on the phone.
