TENOCHTITLAN: Aztec Ruins in the Heart Mexico City

Tenochtitlan was a large Mexica city-state located under much of what is now known as the historic center of Mexico City.

It is quite remarkable that an entire ancient Aztec city exists under the city. The ancient city discovered when a local worker was drilling to access electricity cables.

Once found, the government had two square blocks excavated by demolishing the existing buildings. Additionally, there are places throughout the Zocalo where you can see the ruins below ground.

Excellent job!. Many sites and things to discover in Mexico. There are 35 UNESCO World Heritage in the country, thousands of pre-columbian archeological sites, hundreds of magical towns, natural beauties and colonial Cities.

Definitely one of my favorite attractions in Mexico City. I spent over 2 hours there. It was much bigger than what I expected it be. You will probably like Teotihuacan too!

I remember walking around the dig site when they first discovered it back in 1979-80. Was going to school about 6 blocks from el Zocalo.

If I heard him correctly, he said when they found the ruins, they decided to destroy the new stuff, in favor of investigating the old. That's pretty cool. It would have been lost if in US, where findings like that would usually result in it being covered up for progress.

so I am watching your videos. We are thinking of traveling to Mexico City, MX. Did you guys sign up for tours or drive your own car to these places? If you did tours, is there a tour company that you recommend? Also where did you stay when you traveled down there?
